Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sari Roth-Roemer.
Dr. Roth-Roemer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up as a native Arizonan, I find comfort in both the smell of the desert rain and the heat of a summer day. My desert roots foster a hardy resiliency and compassion for those who are looking to accept the difficulties in their lives.
I think I was born to be a helper. At the age of 10, friends started coming to me for a listening ear and by the time I entered high school, I knew this was my calling. My father was a talented physician, so I initially assumed that I would follow in his footsteps, until I took my first psychology course… and then my first organic chemistry course! The choice was clear. Psychology made sense to me. It shaped my studies and then my life.
Perhaps because of my father’s medical background, I found myself drawn to working with people coping with illness and life transitions. I maintained that focus through my training at Smith College (B.A.), Harvard University (M.Ed.), Arizona State University (Ph.D.) and University of Washington Medical School (post-doctoral residency). I have made it my life’s work to pass compassion for self and others on to my patients. As I witnessed people face huge physical challenges – bodies that had turned on them, illnesses over which they had no control – I realized that minds and hearts could be taught to uncover the strong and resilient people they were. By helping them to tune into their own answers, my patients learn to trust themselves and their intuition. They discover that they have a choice about how they cope with the difficulties in their lives.
Along with seeing patients in my private practice in Scottsdale, I teach and present at conferences and health care facilities across the country on topics of mind, body and spirit balance. I was thrilled to be invited to give a TEDx talk on the healing power of compassion (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzPiKjnMn_k&feature=youtu.be)! I particularly love training and supervising advanced psychology doctoral students at ASU studying behavioral medicine. My current research explores the role of intuition, compassion and spirituality in the psychological healing process, as well as the practical application of recent scientific evidence linking mindful awareness, gratitude and compassion to neural network changes in the brain.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Life is filled with ups and downs. No one has a life without obstacles, including my own. Divorce, single-motherhood, a back injury and caring for aging parents have all been part of my journey. Luckily, these obstacles have taught me valuable lessons about strength, determination and resiliency. I try hard to practice what I preach. I work on being aware of the stories that I tell myself and I try to turn these conversations with myself into stories of self-compassion and support. When I practice a mindful approach to life’s difficulties, it helps me pass this on to the people that I work with.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Intuitive Psychology, PLC – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Intuitive Psychology, PLC, was developed out of a wish to have a psychology practice with a new perspective on counseling, aimed at helping people intuitively cope and find balance in all areas of their lives… mind, body and spirit. My practice is dedicated to helping people manage major transitions in their lives, including illness, aging, brain injury, cognitive difficulties and other life changing circumstances. I offer individual therapy, cognitive evaluation, as well as innovative workshops and retreats, providing unique opportunities for connecting with others, educating participants about important psychological and wellness topics, as well as enhancing personal growth.
I specialize in working with adults challenged by medical and cognitive issues. People who work with me can expect help with exploring problem areas, expanding your awareness of solutions available to you and creating a wellness plan… all with the goal of helping people live their lives fully and happily as quickly as possible.
Intuitive psychology integrates a variety of psychological theories, including mindfulness, cognitive-behavioral and intuitive approaches, adding a unique mind-body-spirit approach tailored to their individual needs. My aim is to teach people how to listen more clearly to their inner wisdom and find their own answers.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Catch me on the Intuitive Psychology World Tour! My goal has always been to help others. I have practiced with individuals for many years in my private practice and in rehab hospitals. Most recently, I have begun offering regularly scheduled educational workshops on Intuitive Psychology and wellness topics. These round table workshops have turned into wonderful forums for discussion and learning among an always diverse group of participants. I am currently developing day long retreats to focus on topics of mind-body wellness and developing intuition. My upcoming book will explain the theory of Intuitive Psychology in greater detail and will provide strategies for how to use intuition to cope with the ups and downs of life. I am developing a curriculum to train counselors and helping professionals to use their own intuition to in turn teach those they work with how to use their intuition to heal and find their own answers. My objective is two-folds – to help people to learn to listen more clearly to their own inner wisdom and to train helping professionals learn how to help others do just that. As always, I hope to have some fun and learn a lot along the way.
