Meet Dr. Julio Reis of Life Studio Wellness in Old Town Scottsdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Julio Reis.

Dr. Reis, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was inspired to do the work I do after a long, difficult struggle with stress and anxiety in my own life. It began when I was in high school. I went from a thriving three-sport athlete to feeling so much fear I didn’t want to leave the house. I was taken to many doctors, each of which had a different diagnosis for me. The only option I was given was medication. No one ever explained to me why I was having these feelings or what was going on. Not knowing what to do, I followed the advice of family and the doctors and started taking medication. Unfortunately, this did not fix the problem. In fact, it only led me down deeper into a spiral of continued anxiety, panic, and new symptoms. I never wanted pills to dictate my life, but they started doing just that, and soon I could hardly recognize myself. This struggle haunted me for the next 15 years and negatively affected everything from school to work to my closest relationships. I asked my doctor when I could get off these medications and was told I would be on them for the rest of my life.

I came to a point where I began to question what I believed about myself and what I was being told by doctors and my family. I had such inner conflict because I knew I was not living up to my potential. I remembered that deep inside I had always known fear and suffering were not a part of my purpose in this life.

I was then introduced to chiropractic and its philosophy. I learned the physical, emotional, and spiritual bodies are connected and work together in order to express one’s full, innate potential. I learned the role of the nervous system and how it impacts our overall health. I saw firsthand how the body has the ability to heal itself and regulate itself. I experienced how far-reaching a chiropractic adjustment can be, and even change someone’s life.
I decided to rebuild myself brick by brick. I challenged everything I was told about my condition. I pushed my boundaries beyond my comfort zone. I began to look inward and get reconnected with the potential that was there from the very beginning. Chiropractic supported my transformation and kept pushing me to express the very best version of myself.

I believe that in order to truly help someone else heal and grow, you have to do the work for yourself first.
Throughout this journey, I have learned that the body and mind are extremely complex. They require careful attention that involves more than just a band-aid over a symptom. Suppressing symptoms is very different from addressing the root cause of a problem. I learned that everything you do to your body affects your mind and vice versa. This is the foundation of vitalism and vitalistic chiropractic; the body can heal itself if it is brought into a state of balance, free from interference. This is true no matter what phase of life we are in; from life inside the womb to the later stages of life. Everyone deserves to express their greatness. Today I live with more freedom, confidence, and certainty. My passion for helping other people has never been so great!

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I believe that any time you are making core changes that redefine who you are and what you truly believe about yourself, there will be a struggle. The struggle is an opportunity to grow and learn. It is up to us how quickly we learn and how quickly we grow as a person. I believe the struggles and self-doubt present when we are not expressing our full potential in life. I always felt a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach when I was settling for something less than what I knew I could achieve.

We have to understand that our nervous system absorbs and remembers every experience we have had in life, especially the ones with an emotional attachment. Every time you are told “No!” or “You can’t do that” as a child, your body stores that going forward. It becomes ingrained as truth or pattern in the nervous system and begins to shape who you are and what you think of yourself. That’s how belief systems are born. The reason chiropractic is so powerful is that with every adjustment we are resetting or wiping the nervous system clean, just like closing down extra windows on your computer that slow things down. It is then much easier to plug in a new truth or operating system that works more efficiently and essentially supports more growth. That is why we spend so much time getting to know our patients. We want to know what their nervous system has been through so we can customize the process for that individual.

Vitalism is the foundation of our practice both on the chiropractic side, led by myself, and the acupuncture side, led by my wife, Jessi. Vitalism is the understanding that the body is self-healing, self-maintaining, and self-regulating as long as it is in a state of balance, free from interference. The overall experience in our practice is unlike any other. I practice something called connection-based care, which is how we are able to get not just changes in aches and pains but deeper changes. People report feeling better, more connected, more aware, improved sleep, improved digestion and less stress and anxiety. My style of adjusting is a combination of breath work, movement, and gentle adjustments with an emphasis on reconnecting the body. In my analysis, I look not just for restrictions in the spine called “subluxations”, but also how much tension the muscular and fascial systems in the body are carrying and where the root cause of dysfunction is coming from. This all makes the adjusting experience more gentle and more enjoyable.

In addition, I offer two unique specialties, pediatric and prenatal chiropractic. I am certified by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). Adjusting babies is very different than adjusting adults. The adjustments are much softer and it only requires the tip of my finger gently contacting the misalignment in the spine. Babies often suffer misalignments in their spine from the birth process and can exhibit signs such as inability to turn their head to one side, being fussy or irritable, squirming when being held, preferring to latch on one side and colic. I also hold a certification in the Webster technique for pregnancy. During pregnancy chiropractic care helps align the pelvis, relieves the stress of the spine and allows for optimal function of the uterus, all of which promote natural and safe birth. Women under chiropractic care while pregnant report a quicker birth process, less back pain, and less back labor.

I am so proud to be working alongside my wife Jessi Reis, who is an incredible acupuncturist and healer. She specializes in natural fertility and women’s health and brings a wealth of knowledge in both Eastern and Western medicine to our practice. Together we have created a space that is welcoming and safe for all.

What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
The health and wellness industry is steadily growing, especially in a city like ours. There has been a shift in awareness of what health and wellness really are. People are moving from more open-minded cities and it’s shifting the vibe of this place. People here want to take an active role in their health and wellness and they realize it’s not just going for a check-up once a year. They understand physical and emotional wellness are things to be worked on daily. More people exercise regularly, know what they should be eating most of the time and are more tuned in to their bodies. Individuals here realize they have choices when it comes to their health and their body, and that may look different for each person. They may choose a route that involves exercise, dietary and lifestyle changes over pharmaceuticals. We think it’s great for them but for us also because we offer a drug-free approach to health and wellness, and can assist them on their health journey.
