Today we’d like to introduce you to Doug Caris.
Doug, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out in the painting industry in Atlanta, GA when I was 19 years old. I had a family friend that owned a painting company there that offered me an opportunity to work for him, learn the business, & if I did well eventually start my own company.
My role in the beginning was to paint or pressure wash during the day and then go door to door in the evenings setting up free estimates for potential customers. After doing well in those areas I moved up to sales and then after a year went onto another painting company in Birmingham, AL. There, I spent three years being head of production managing around 25 painters.
In 2012 I was offered a sales manager position for a painting company in Phoenix and I jumped at the chance. After helping grow sales for the company, I was offered a chance to partner with two other people and buyout the owner in 2014.
Since we took over the business in 2014 we’ll have tripled revenue by the end of this year and have opened 3 additional offices including one out of state in Las Vegas, NV.
Has it been a smooth road?
I’ve been very fortunate to have had a great mentor along the way that was always coaching me and pushing me to grow and be better. That being said though, I remember multiple times when I felt that I’d never get to my goal of owning my own business. I almost quit a few times & I can vividly see myself if I had quit and gone down another path and where I’d be today if I had done that.
There have been lots of ups and downs and plenty of challenges along the way. Lots of times I’ve had decisions to make that seemed like very big forks in the road. What I’ve learned was to always go to someone you trust and look up to when you have a difficult decision to make and get their advice before making it.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Arizona Painting Company – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We’re a residential & commercial painting company that specializes in interior & exterior painting. We pride ourselves in setting the standard for the rest of the painting industry in Arizona by doing jobs the right way and always using high quality products so the paint job will last.
For the last 3 years we’ve been voted the #1 painting company in Ranking Arizona, which ranks the top companies in each professions for the state of Arizona. Along with that we have an A+ rating at the BBB & Angies List. We also have a 5 star rating on Google & Yelp.
I’m most proud of the growth we’ve had as a company, but still been able to keep our culture intact. We’re a company that is focused on growth, both as a business and also the growth of all of the individuals on our team. When someone comes to work for our company we want them to not only learn and become better in the painting industry, but also grow in their personal life and become more successful with whatever their goals and dreams are.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the weather in Phoenix & how there’s always so much to do. I love to golf and there aren’t many places that you can golf year round. The growth and economy of our city is another thing that makes me feel very appreciative to be a part of an area of our country that so many people keep moving too.
The only thing I dislike is that there aren’t that many lakes in the area. I grew up in Michigan where everyone in the state is no further than 7 miles from a lake, so Phoenix is a little different in that aspect.
