Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominick Provenzano.
Dominick, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I started taking guitar lessons when I was about 13 or 14-years-old. Soon after, I started to identify a few musical influences, mainly Bob Dylan at the time. I would try to write songs like his and I would learn about 2 or 3 Dylan songs a week. When I turned 18, I begged my dad to take me to open mics. I was still playing a lot of older music, and I started to form friendships with some local legends like Billy Brett and Graham Benike. Those guys took me under their wing and helped me grow as a musician during my formative years in music.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do, why, and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
To generalize my work, I would say I fall into the Folk category although I include elements from all types of music. I’ve always been fond of the honesty and simplicity of Folk music. Music is my source of honest expression. I write, record, and produce my own music more often than not. I feel like that is the best way to make it a true reflection of my own ideas.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
My biggest piece of advice is to make work that is true to yourself. David Bowie said something along the lines of “don’t make art for the gallery” and that’s become my rule of thumb. It’s a hard industry, and I find that it’s more rewarding this way.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
My first solo EP is available on most online retailers and streaming platforms, and I frequently share original music through Bandcamp. My band, Old Star will be releasing an EP later this year, but for now, you can find a few of our singles on Bandcamp as well.
To support my original work, you can purchase my songs through Bandcamp, tell a friend, come to an original show, or just listen.
