Meet Dianne Hamre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dianne Hamre.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
As a young girl, I loved the idea of being involved in birth and thought I would grow up being a Labor and Delivery nurse. Instead, I ended up getting married after my first year of college and within five years we had four kids! I never made it back to college to become a nurse but I was able to find my true calling as a birth doula. I had the privilege of witnessing so many beautiful moments but I couldn’t figure out why nobody had a camera to capture them forever. I purchased my first camera the very next day and taught myself the basics of photography…the rest is history!

Please tell us about your art.
The birth of a baby is one of the most intimate and life-changing moments anyone will ever experience. Nothing compares to the moment you meet your baby for the first time and it’s easy to quickly forget those tiny details. A wedding can always be re-staged but there are no do-overs in birth. Having a birth photographer allows the partner or support person to be there at all times and not have to worry about picking up a camera. The lighting at births can also be tricky so it helps to have someone who knows how to properly shoot at 10,000 ISO if necessary. The details of birth quickly fade as the new parents are completely absorbed in this new little life. I am there to capture it all…working through the waves and waves of contractions, the moment they take their first breath and the first time they are placed in your arms.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
When I deliver a new parent’s birth story of photos, I love to watch them walk down Memory Lane. There are often tears as they remember how it felt to meet their little one for the first time. I typically hear them say they have no idea how I captured so many photos without them noticing and they also felt like I never left their side…That is how I know I did my job well!

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can see my work on Instagram or my webpage.

I encourage people to secure their due date as early as possible as my calendar fills up many months in advance. I’m often booking out 8 months in advance…Yes, that’s as soon as she gets a positive pee stick!
