Hi Derek, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I initially got started in the mortgage industry back in 2006. I helped a friend move from my home town in Wisconsin to Arizona who was in the business. I wanted it! He eventually got me an interview to be a loan officer and I got the job. I packed up everything I owned into my 1990 Honda Civic and drove out. Little did I know, my car would over heat driving over the mountains, the place I was supposed to live didn’t come through, I ended up sleeping on some friends couches and spare bedrooms for over a year, my car got stolen, I ran out of money and had to have family help me out. But, I was determined not to fail. You only fail when you give up. I didnt really know what was involved in this new profession. The first day I was put on the phones, given a phone book and was told to start dialing. Then it started to click. Looking back, I remind myself that persistence, always be learning and never giving up is the key to success
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Absolutely not! Moving out to Arizona from Wisconsin, not knowing anyone or the business was not easy at all. Everyday I have to sharpen my skills with being a better communicator, learning new products and how to market myself to be able to help people
