Today we’d like to introduce you to Denise Kilmer
Denise, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Denise L. Kilmer, I am an artist from Phoenix Arizona, and living in Fountain Hills. I have been painting with oils for 30 years. The first gallery I showed my abstract paintings was called The Paper Heart on Grand Ave. in downtown Phoenix. When The Paper Heart closed in 2007 I chose to open a gallery of my own, called Phoenix Fall Space. When I closed PFS I opened another gallery on Roosevelt St called Lotus Contemporary Art. I am now co/owner of Fusion Fine Art, with my partner and husband Bradley Donaldson here in Fountain Hills.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being an artist and gallery owner is a great amount of work and play. I get to make art in my studio and also meet wonderful people who also love art. I love being in a creative environment everyday. There are challenges being an artist. But, the challenges are different for every artist. I cannot complain or have thin skin. Every day is different and you always hope for the best.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an abstract painter. I use oils on canvas. I am mostly know for my large canvases with bright colors, shapes, forms and texture. I usually work on several paintings at a time. One painting may take up to a month sometimes longer. Each piece is original and looks wonderful in office buildings, homes, offices, lofts, and lobbies. I have about 60 paintings now in my gallery. I am most proud of the work I am doing now. However, looking at photos of work that I did 20 years ago still makes me feel inspired today.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Be creative everyday. Find out what you like to do. Maybe its coloring with crayons or drawing with graphite. Maybe it means working in the garden or crocheting. Don’t be afraid to be vulnerable. Don’t stop making art. Practice does not make perfect. But, if it feels right for you, then it is perfect.
