Meet Dejan Simurdic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dejan Simurdic.

Dejan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Serbia, Europe. I run two successful businesses there and then decided to move to Africa. I spent almost three years in Botswana and then moved to the US. I worked in many different industries and gained a lot of experience. I have been living in the Valley since 2001. I am married, with one wonderful child.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
One of the biggest obstacles is awareness. Drowning rates are slowly dropping, but they are still too high. A lot of people are not aware that quality swim lessons can reduce the chance of drowning by 88% and over 50% of Americans are not safe in the water, according to the Red Cross survey.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Founded in England in 1981, British Swim School is the nationwide leader in water-survival and swimming lessons for kids and adults. We are the pioneer of non-traditional infant water safety programs. Over 16,000 kids and adults learn at British Swim School every week in 22 states and three countries. Saving lives is our passion! We provide a wide variety of survival and swim lessons from three months old through advanced swimmers, adults and adapted aquatics. Our swim instructors are highly trained and go through a minimum of 40 hours of training before teaching a lesson. We make sure that all of our employees fit the company culture which results in very low employee turnover. That means that you or your child will most probably be working with the same instructors. Our lessons are small in size and personalized for each student which, combined with a science-based program, gives an opportunity to our students to progress and learn much faster.

Our amazing Aquatics Director, Vicki has over 40 years of aquatics experience and she is credentialed by the University of Pennsylvania for Adapted Aquatics. Once per year she goes to Aquatics Conference where she meets with other Aquatics Directors from British Swim School and they work together on program improvements and new ideas. She is continuously passing all of her knowledge to our swim instructors and staff. We operate out of leased pools in gyms, like LA Fitness in Gilbert and you don’t have to be a member of a gym to join us. We also operate in communities with pools during warmer months. If you live in or manage one of those communities, please let us know. For more information about water safety, FAQs and pricing please visit our website or call us at 480-725-9292. Our friendly staff is always ready and willing to answer any questions you might have about our program.
