Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Venkatesh.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my professional career as a Registered Nurse but after my children were born, I decided I needed to a change and went back to college at Arizona State University for undergraduate and graduate studies in Communication Disorders.
My career in Audiology leads me first to Mesa Public Schools for educational audiology. Over the years, I began my private practice in Audiology, but remained somewhat diversified, continuing to include my first love, educational audiology as well as hearing conservation and industrial audiology. My office practice focuses on diagnostic audiology for adults and children, including fitting of hearing aids of all types, assistive listening devices, ear protection and providing aural habilitation for our hearing impaired patients.
For the last twelve years, I have had the privilege to travel to Central and South America to participate in clinics to provide hearing aids to the underserved in those regions. About seven years ago, I founded the Matagalpa Children’s Hearing Project, for the children living in and near the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A smooth road? Not at all! Many sleepless nights were spent wondering if a private practice was a wise choice for me. Ultimately, it was the right choice and through all the bumps and valleys, I would not have changed this journey. I have met and continue to meet the most wonderful people, both here in Arizona, and throughout my travels and interactions providing hearing healthcare to the children in Nicaragua.
Some of the specific struggles involved learning to navigate healthcare insurance billing, learning new computer software, meeting payroll, establishing and negotiating contracts, etc. Generally, the things that one does not learn except by doing!
