Meet Dawnyel Smink of CANYON LANDS INSURANCE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawnyel Smink.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dawnyel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As President of Canyon Lands Insurance, I challenge our clients and our agencies to focus on what matters most—how to protect their families, their businesses and their assets from the unexpected. As a former elementary school teacher, I’ve always been passionate about education. And now I use that passion to educate our clients about the impact insurance can make for them.

Our firm has 20 franchise locations, so I’m also committed to ensuring our agencies keep pace in a rapidly changing insurance landscape. We are technology driven company and we are constantly evolving by adopting the latest approaches to help our agencies thrive.

That’s why I spend my days:
· creating technology-driven processes
· establishing innovative ways to improve the insurance industry
· developing protection strategies for individuals and businesses

I am energized by making a difference in our communities and am honored to be a part of the Charitable Planned Giving Council for Make-A-Wish Arizona. At Canyon Lands Insurance a donation is made to Make-A-Wish for every new client to our agency.

Away from work, you’ll find me on a golf course, a personal playground that allows me to explore new places. I’ve played golf all over the world from the Old Course at St. Andrews in Scotland to Playa Grande in the Dominican – and love new challenges and taking my game to new levels.

Has it been a smooth road?
In a male-dominated industry, it has not always been a smooth road. I have had benefactors (male and female) that have lifted me up in my career and I have had detractors (male and female) who have pushed me down simply because of my gender. I wanted to help more women in my industry strive for top positions as currently women only hold 6%, so last year I helped found WIISE- Women In Insurance Sharing Empowerment.

This group is not a man against women type of group and we are not asking for special treatment. We are asking to be considered equals. We are working to empower women to step out of their comfort zone and to just go for it. It is important to recognize men that are the benefactors out there and we have created an award called The Menafactor Award to spotlight their support.

We believe in committing to individuals, families, business and agents who focus on protecting what matters most today and tomorrow. We achieve this through evaluating risk on the individual priorities of our clients and create a strategic plan to manage their personal and business insurance.

We match these needs with vast insurance products through multiple carriers. Insurance has been a stagnant industry and we work to be the modern agency dedicated innovating on a daily basis. Allowing for technology to be there for our clients in a meaningful, yet accessible way.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I grew up in the Valley and love how diverse our area has become. We have some of the greatest restaurants, sports facilities and natural wonders around. All you have to do is drive around and look to the horizon where you will see our majestic sunsets and colorful mountains.
