Today we’d like to introduce you to David Ventura.
David, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was going to bring a big donut chain out to Scottsdale from Las Vegas, NV but the negotiations went south. I had already chosen the location but just needed to work out the monetary and operational considerations. Driving home from Las Vegas without a contract after the deal fell apart, I was faced with the decision as to whether or not to move forward, knowing nothing about donuts or how to make them. On my way home from Vegas driving through Kingman I encountered two bright lights ahead of me on the highway, after I flashed my brights at what I thought was a vehicle, it quickly lifted into the air and approached me, hovering over my car, Before I could make out what it was, it turned into a burst of colorful light, and before my eyes could focus, it became a tiny dot in the distant horizon. I was talking to a friend on the phone when it all happened. My exact words to him at the time were: “If I don’t make it back to Phoenix I was abducted by aliens!” My vision suddenly became crystal clear and I pulled off the road and secured the domain name, aliendonuts.com, which just happened to be available. The rest, as they say, is alien history…
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been anything but smooth. Countless delays on our launch, operational issues, labor issues, landlord issues, you name it. The struggle has been beyond real. It has probably been the toughest and most challenging business I have ever created. But I know at the end of it all it will be well worth the battle.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are an artisan donut shop. We have only been in business since December of 2018 and Phoenix Magazine voted us the best Vegan donut in town. Our donuts are unique. Space age, vegan, gluten-friendly, and traditional classics fill our case. The vibe is upbeat, we play dance music all day and we don’t discriminate. Aliens and humanoids alike are welcome in our shop. I am most proud of the fact that together as a team we have learned how to operate this business. None of us have much experience in the space, but we have managed to figure it all out.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel our city is a great place for small businesses and the laws are set up to encourage small businesses. I am in constant contact with the governor and he always has an ear for suggestions on how we can improve our local economy. I would encourage other business owners to bring their businesses to Maricopa County as well.
