Today we’d like to introduce you to David Oseguera Goetz.
David, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Fitness was never prevalent in my family or in my life growing up, primarily because I was born with asthma. As the first U.S. Citizen born in my family, I was raised with high expectations for a better future. My parents were 42 & 50 years of age when I was born, and I had three siblings who were already teenagers. Needless to say, it was easy to limit my physical activity because I was raised like an only child with five parents who were worried about my health. It made it easy for me to fluctuate weight growing up because of my limited activity. In my teenage years, it became more apparent that I had a bad relationship with food. Unfortunately, my dad passed away just before I turned 15 and my problems became worse. I became ashamed of my body, especially when comparing myself to the taller jocks in school. For those who don’t know me personally, I’m only 5’2″ as an adult now, so you can imagine how I felt back then. Anyway, there was A LOT that happened after my dad’s passing and I developed depression & generalized anxiety disorder as a result. Even into adulthood and after marrying my husband Shawn, I struggled with these issues and could not overcome them. In my twenties, I tried several diets and a few workout videos to get control of my weight and my life, but I failed more than I succeeded. After meeting my husband we worked together on my goals, trying more diets, workout vids, and I even tried weight-loss injections for a while. None it made a difference because I wasn’t making any lifestyle changes.
2.5 years ago, I reached my peak weight of 160lbs and I had enough. We tried one more diet before switching to a plant-based lifestyle and my weight-loss journey took off! I was feeling better than ever, but still not incorporating enough exercise. Just over a year ago, I read a book that changed my mindset and changed my life really. In the second chapter, the author speaks of a willing and unwilling mindset. There’s a bit to it, but after reading this chapter, I said to myself, “I am unwilling to go back to being overweight. I am unwilling to feel ashamed of my body anymore, and I am unwilling to see those numbers on the scale.” Then, I covered what I was going to do about it by saying to myself “I am willing to make changes that I need to do this” and I bought my first gym membership that week! Since then, only over a year ago, I have fallen in love with fitness, passed my certification as a certified personal trainer, AND found my purpose at a fitness conference! All of these things have led me to start my own business as a personal trainer now titled The Fit O.G. – I should also add the O.G. came from marrying my husband. My last name was just Oseguera before, and we decided to keep both last names making it Oseguera Goetz or OG for short.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not one bit. Anxiety and depression have been my biggest hurdles in starting the business. Being so new to the industry, I lacked the confidence to put myself out there and anxiety really held me back for a while. I’ve been working with a therapist and two mentors over the last few months that have helped incredibly to get me out of my head and moving forward!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Fit O.G. story. Tell us more about the business.
The Fit O.G. is a Personal Training business specializing in helping women and men make lifestyle and body transformations. As a new company, I look forward to being known for changing the lives of people struggling with obesity & confidence and providing them with an opportunity to live a higher quality of life. Nothing makes me more proud than to hear others be inspired to make a change in their lives because of something I did or said. Even something as simple as a smile can make a huge difference in someone’s day. A warm & friendly smile, combined with my attention to detail, patience, professionalism, and short frame makes me easily approachable compared to the rest. You will not find another trainer who will be there to support you and make you smile every step of the way like me!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
The industry is already moving towards more online training versus in person and I can see that continuing to make strides in the industry with new technologies available. With that, I think people might shift towards leaving the gym also and opt for working out from home instead. This is providing they find affordable home equipment solutions that don’t require much space, which is being done now. Regardless, live streaming training and workouts might continue to rise as well over the next several years.
