Meet David and Krystal Carman of Plant Bar AZ in North Phoenix, New River

Today we’d like to introduce you to David and Krystal Carman.

David and Krystal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The idea came about around 2004 while I was walking nurseries in Southern California learning about horticulture and trying to memorize the names of the plants. The nurseries were large and sprawling and help was hard to find. I thought to myself someday I will have a nursery that is small enough to be quaint and there will always be someone to help guide the people visiting and provide answers to their questions. It stayed a dream that I shared with my wife, Krystal when we met in Southern California. We got married and started a family. We moved quite a bit from all over Southern California to Florida and finally, back to Arizona where we began to set down some roots. When we moved to Anthem, we noticed a place just North of the area that had the perfect little place sitting on top of the store and as we drove by, we said to each other that would be the perfect spot for the Plant Bar. Five years later, we started doing pop up plant shops in North Phoenix and were running much of it from our casita in our home in Anthem. Krystal made a vision board and we placed a picture of a big white barn labeled Plant Bar with the year 2019 written above it. Six months later, the property we had eyed when we first moved here went for sale and we jumped at the chance to make the dream we had years before a reality.

Has it been a smooth road?
As a husband and wife team, we have had plenty of challenges, most have come from learning to work alongside each other. We have disagreed plenty of times and have had to learn to compromise even more than before. Capital or the shortness of it has been a struggle as any new startup will always have. We have had to be clever with the use of the resources we have available to us.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
At the heart of everything we offer, we are a plant nursery and home decor store specializing in hard to find and unique plants and decor for the inside and the outside of your home. We are known for this and our events that are held at the store. The proudest moment for me is to take a moment and pause and watch our guests while they are visiting and just taking in the ambiance that we created. The laughter and conversation of our guests truly enjoying themselves is so rewarding and is seen often here. We are uniquely different on purpose in everything we do which sets us apart from our competitors you come to the Plant Bar for the experience and you take home some cool stuff too.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
We love Phoenix and our city. We love New River and the small-town charm here and the quick access to the city life when we want to experience it.
