Today we’d like to introduce you to David Allan Paul.
Thanks for sharing your story with us David Allan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My interest and aptitude in art was something that was always present from a very early age. My introductory award of recognition was a first-place honor in a citywide competition when I was ten years old. Working art classes into the typical middle and high school curriculum kept me exploring my creativity while developing those skills on my own time also. I have wondered what my artistic direction would have taken had I remained in my native New England, but having now been in Arizona for five decades, my work has substantially reflected the Southwest surroundings that have influenced me for so long.
I have taken classes of interest over the years, but never with the pursuit of a degree in mind. Having explored the mediums of pen and ink, drawing, silkscreening, ceramics, monoprinting, and painting, I find myself focused on the medium of acrylic on canvas and panel, as I enjoy its versatility. My work frequently includes texture, collage and glazing…… methods that acrylic lends itself well to. My current body of work is focused on interpreting the typical Southwest landscape, though I will be returning to full abstraction and figurative subjects, as I tend to work in series in this manner.
The vistas that appear in my work are not literal places, but having traveled the region, they are very much my personal interpretation of the geography that is prevalent here. My initial representation by a traditional gallery happened when I was twenty-one years old, in the town of Scottsdale, followed by Carefree, then Sedona and back to Scottsdale. My work has found its way across the United States, Canada, England, Germany and Taiwan.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I personally think it is almost a mantra among artists, and galleries for that matter, that the creative road is an often difficult, uneven path to take. Interest and passion truly have to be present for us to continue doing what we do, to find a reason to keep exploring and honing our skills.
Though my current work is a reflection of personal choice, I have always been able to be aware of market forces, and have created many a body of work that had that overall appeal to the larger, broader audience. I learned much doing that work, but the mindset necessary for this is not something every artist is comfortable with. No doubt many creatives have been affected by recent economic conditions, as well as the growth of the internet and its reach, though this can and has been used also to advantage. The role of artist, marketer, accountant and salesman is a lot for us to be at one time!
David Allan Paul Fine Art – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As I am the proverbial “one man show”, I wear all the hats. I am continuously experimenting with unique ways of interpreting the subjects I depict, stretching boundaries where I can or where the process takes me. Currently, this is almost a second stage for me, as my work took a hiatus for some time due to market changes, and just the need to reevaluate what potential new directions I wished to explore.
Many past bodies of work have been rendered using very self-developed techniques, and thus stood out and apart from the work of other artists, so I hope to keep discovering something that comes across as singular in style.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
That’s an interesting one, and one that has as many answers as there are artists and creatives of all sorts! Success starts with the completion of a work that has reached a level of personal satisfaction for me…. although when is a painting ever really done….. we just have to decide that it is! Thereafter, the overall level of response from viewers, the hoped-for sale, and the continued exploration and execution of work the propels the artistic process forward.

New England’s loss is Arizona’s gain.
