Meet Dave Shrein of Shrein Media in Chandler-Gilbert

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Shrein.

Dave, please share your story with us.

It has always been believed that there are two areas most people believe themselves to be experts in: politics and religion. However, there really is a third and that’s marketing; a very dangerous belief for small business owners.

Many business owners believe that marketing is just talking about their company anywhere and everywhere – without regard to exactly what’s being said. It’s the Field of Dreams premise, but for business: ‘if you build it they will come’ – however, that premise doesn’t cross over from the cornfields of Iowa to a business venture.

I spent nearly ten years working vocationally in Christian churches. The landscape for religious organizations has changed dramatically in the last 40 years. Gone are the days where community members show up every Sunday because ‘it’s church.’ In late 2000, I saw a need for churches to actually put effort into marketing themselves to their surrounding community. After spending nearly 10 years investing in that need for the church, I left the world of non-profit and started Shrein Media.

The reason for starting Shrein Media continues to be the role we take with our clients years later: Advocate. Small business owners need advocates who can think and act in their best interest online. We become their primary advocate for growing their business online.

What I once did for an individual church, our entire company does for hard-working men and women who have a passion to see lives transformed. Our clients believe that they can better the lives of others. They believe their products, services, and offerings will change lives, and it is our job to help future customers find them. Our approach to what we do is pairing the right product with the right person at the right time for the right reasons.

Today, we create online business growth strategies that will guide an online business for 12 to 24 months. We call this our Platform Launch Blueprint. This blueprint strategy is comprehensive, accounting for how a business will use each channel available to them online: web, email, social, ads, SEO, design, and video (live and produced).

For clients who require it, we run their entire marketing department. For the clients who don’t, we hand over a solid strategy that they can implement on their own.

At the end of the day, we want to see men and women of integrity succeed; we’ve been fortunate enough to do that since 2014 and plan on continuing for many years to come.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?

Starting the business has not been a smooth road, but it has been one filled with blessings and providence.

To start the business, we sold our house. In 2014, my wife and I, along with our 2-year-old and newborn moved in with my parents in Chandler. It was essential to remove the burden of having to pay a mortgage while trying to support a young family and start a new business the right way.

The time with my parents was the most difficult time of our marriage. We married in 2006 and moved in with my parents in 2014 and over those 8 years, we developed a very strong relationship with them. But going from total independence to total dependence for any length of time is a very tough change. Every month, it becomes more difficult. After nine months, we were able to move out of my parent’s home and celebrated being able to rent our own home in Tempe. 18 months later we were finally able to purchase a home and moved to Gilbert.

As I’ve heard the story of other entrepreneurs, I’ve made up my mind that in order to give your dream a chance of succeeding, it will take at least one major, life-changing sacrifice. You can’t start a successful business and go out and buy an Xbox. You can’t take glamorous vacations while raising a young family and starting a new business. You have to sacrifice to fulfill the commitments you had prior to starting your business and honor the new ones that arise as you enter into the new season of life.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

Successful online businesses require an all-of-the-above approach to marketing. In order to gain the full benefit of email marketing, you need a successful website strategy. In order to benefit from a website strategy, you must have an inbound strategy.

Shrein Media replaces the shotgun marketing approach with the Platform Launch Blueprint. We develop a 12-24 month online marketing strategy blueprint that provides a recipe for earning online income through the creation and promotion of original content. Our premier strategy product is the Platform Launch Day where we dedicate 100% of our attention and effort into creating a crystal clear money-making plan. With a plan in place, we become the marketing wing of small businesses, hired to execute the blueprint.

Our customers are passionate about what they do, want to see a transformation in the lives of their clients, and have a marketable product that is sold online.

What were you like growing up?

Growing up, I was always planning, strategizing and trying to rally people together. If you ask my mom what I was like, she would tell you that I was always getting all the kids together in order to come up with a plan for what we would do next. I would never bully anyone or become bossy, but would try to build consensus and agreement – even among 7-year-olds – for how we would play.

Like most kids, Junior High and High School were an identity-forming playground. As my friends in the 8th grade started pursuing girls, drinking, drugs, and sex, I decided that I wanted to follow the example of Jesus with my life. When I said yes to modeling my life after Jesus, I said no to a lot of the activities my friends wanted me to do. It became a very lonely time, and looking back, I see my identity was being shaped around something bigger than myself, bigger than momentary decisions. I developed an identity around what was done for me – not what I chose to do.

Because of my faith, I started to see that I had inherent value, not needing to win the approval of others to find my worth. As I matured, I learned how to be friends with people who made different choices than me. I learned how to lead, not as a child, but as a young adult.

I participated in student council. I volunteered in extracurricular events, finding myself in leadership roles. During my senior year, I made the decision not to attend college. My path was shaping up differently than my peers.

In 9th grade, I was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” by my peers. Now, years later, I don’t believe my peers voted for me because of a propensity for success – I believe it was because of my approach to life where I never thought that failure was an option. It wasn’t that I went around putting off a “I will not fail,” attitude, it was that I always had a plan for “here’s how we will succeed.”
