Today we’d like to introduce you to Darrin Hollyman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My path into architecture and design began in 1994, when I took my first job working for a residential architect. I was fresh-faced and eager to learn, and those first two years were foundational. I absorbed everything I could — from drafting techniques and spatial planning to client interactions and construction coordination. It was a hands-on education that sparked a lifelong passion for creating spaces that feel both intentional and inspiring.
After that, I transitioned into working with a structural engineer. This phase of my career was all about precision. I dove deep into the technical side of building — structural layouts, framing systems, and the kind of detailing that makes a design not just beautiful, but buildable. It gave me a strong understanding of how things come together behind the walls, and that knowledge continues to inform every design I create.
In 1998, I made a pivotal move to Bend, Oregon — a region known for its natural beauty and growing demand for luxury homes. I joined a high-end design/build firm, and that’s where my career truly took off. Over the next 21 years, I had the opportunity to design custom homes for discerning clients, each with their own vision and lifestyle. Working within a design/build model allowed me to be involved from concept to completion, ensuring that every detail aligned with the original intent. It also gave me the chance to build strong relationships with local jurisdictions — city planners, county officials, and design review boards — which proved invaluable in navigating approvals and maintaining design integrity.
One of the highlights of my career was serving as the Consultant Building Designer for Brasada Ranch, a luxury resort community in Central Oregon. For four years, I reviewed architectural plans for compliance and completeness, helping maintain the high standards of the development. I’ve personally designed over 30 homes in Brasada Ranch, each one tailored to the site, the client, and the community’s aesthetic. It was a role that combined design leadership with community stewardship, and I loved every minute of it.
In recent years, I’ve expanded my reach into Arizona, designing homes in Phoenix, Gilbert, and Queen Creek. These markets offer exciting opportunities to bring my design sensibilities to new landscapes and clientele. My current focus is on custom homes in the $2–5 million range, with a clear goal of moving into the $10–15 million tier. I thrive in high-end custom home communities — places where design matters, where clients value craftsmanship, and where every home tells a story.
What drives me is more than just architecture — it’s the relationships, the problem-solving, and the chance to create something lasting. I believe great design is about listening, understanding, and translating dreams into spaces that feel effortless and extraordinary. Whether I’m sketching a concept, coordinating with builders, or walking a site with a client, I bring decades of experience, a collaborative spirit, and a commitment to excellence.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not exactly — but I wouldn’t trade the journey for anything.
Like most people who’ve built a career over decades, I’ve faced my share of challenges. Early on, the struggle was simply learning the ropes. I was young, working under seasoned professionals, and trying to absorb as much as I could while proving myself. There were long hours, tight deadlines, and plenty of moments where I had to figure things out the hard way. But those experiences taught me grit, humility, and the importance of precision.
Transitioning from working with an architect to an engineer was a shift in mindset. I had to recalibrate from creative ideation to technical execution — and that wasn’t always easy. But it gave me a dual lens that’s rare in this industry: the ability to design with both beauty and buildability in mind.
Relocating to Bend in 1998 was exciting, but it also meant starting fresh in a new market. I had to build relationships from the ground up — with clients, contractors, and local jurisdictions. There were times when projects stalled due to permitting issues or design review challenges, and I had to learn how to navigate bureaucracy without compromising the vision. That’s where persistence and diplomacy came into play.
One of the biggest challenges came during economic downturns — especially the 2008 recession. The luxury home market took a hit, and like many in the industry, I had to adapt. I leaned into my relationships, focused on quality over quantity, and found ways to stay relevant even when the market was uncertain. It was a test of resilience, and it made me a better designer and businessperson.
Even in recent years, expanding into Arizona has come with its own learning curve. Every region has its own codes, climate considerations, and client expectations. But I’ve found that the key is staying curious, being adaptable, and never losing sight of the client’s vision.
So no, it hasn’t been a smooth road — but it’s been a meaningful one. Every challenge has shaped the way I design, communicate, and lead. And every setback has ultimately led to growth
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
