Today we’d like to introduce you to Daniel Sluyk.
Daniel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona, where my father was a dentist. I always looked up to him and his work ethic, and he had a good work-life balance, but I never thought I would follow in his footsteps. During college, I explored many different medical professions but kept coming back to dentistry. There were so many things that drew me to the profession, so I decided to follow in my father’s footsteps after all. I quickly realized I had made a great decision and that this was going to be a perfect profession for me. I applied to schools and decided to attend the University of Colorado for Dental School.
Now one thing about me is that when I decide to do something, I go for it. I got married at the age of 20 during my sophomore year of college during my spring break. I also graduated a year early from college, finishing in three years. We had our first child after my first year of dental school at the time of my board exams and then had our second child during dental school as well. We have since had two more children, completing our family of six.
After dental school, we moved back to Scottsdale, Arizona, where I worked as an associate at various practices for two years gaining experience. I then decided to purchase my own practice in 2016. I have now owned a solo family dental practice in Scottsdale for three years, and I’m loving it. I love the relationships I form with my patients over the years. I love the artistic and cosmetic side of dentistry. I love the fact that I can be a business owner. I love helping people and making them healthier. I couldn’t have asked for a better career path, and I’m excited to see what the future holds for my family and my business.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not all been easy. Dental school was extremely challenging on its own, but then having two children and learning to be a father and balance family life and schooling and studying and lab work was very difficult at times. Then becoming a business owner comes with its challenges. I was trained well on the dentistry part of things but had no idea how to run a small business. I had to learn a lot on the fly and relied on mentors for guidance as I got started.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Sluyk Family Dentistry – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I am a general family practice dentist. We see people of all ages, from 6-month-old babies on. We offer a variety of services, including cosmetic dentistry. I feel that we are most proud of the culture we have built and the family atmosphere we’ve created with our team and our patients. We truly care about our patients and wants what’s best for them. We get to know them on a personal level. We also strive to offer the absolute best quality care possible.
Is there anyone, in particular, you would like to recognize? Mentors, etc.
My parents raised me to be responsible, driven, and hard-working. I owe them a lot of credit. I also learned a lot from the dentists that I worked for when I first got out of school. They taught me a lot about dentistry, but also about running a business.
