Meet Dana Brown of DoorDash

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dana Brown.

Dana, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was always a bit of a tech nerd growing up. I was fascinated by the early internet and the connectivity and communities that it created. In high school, I became obsessed with music and started a handful of websites which I used as a tool to meet and interview some of my favorite bands. It was the early 2000’s and almost too easy — I doubt anyone realized it was a fifteen-year-old making the press requests.

My dad was an early Apple adopter, so, growing up, we had all the big first-gen Apple products: iMac G3, iPod, etc. It was only fitting that after graduating college I went to work for Apple retail. Once my love for coordination and operations became too strong to ignore, I moved on to various administrative roles at tech companies throughout Phoenix. I joined DoorDash in 2016 and now serve as the HR Generalist for our Arizona teams. Since then, we have tripled in size and are still growing.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My dad was a lawyer for the same firm his entire career, and my mother was a high school language teacher for 35 years. I admire their grit and, despite having retired several years ago, they’re both still actively involved in their former professions. As someone who has worked in six roles at four companies in eight years, I wonder if I’m sometimes too quick to jump to the next opportunity. Ultimately, I’m grateful that DoorDash has given me the space to combine many of my favorite aspects of previous jobs into a role that stays fresh and challenging.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
DoorDash is a technology company that connects customers with their favorite local and national businesses. We work with local restaurants to bring your meal directly to consumers, but we also partner with 90% of top 100 U.S. restaurants that offer delivery, which is more top national restaurant partnerships than anyone else in the on-demand delivery space. So while DoorDash is the primary outsourcing partner for the biggest chains in the country like Wendy’s, Taco Bell, The Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, and Dunkin’ Donuts, we also champion corner restaurants.

DoorDash is in 56 markets across the U.S. and we are always continuing to find new ways to help merchants grow their businesses. Last year we launched DoorDash Drive, which offers merchants another way of moving food — or anything else, for that matter — from point A to point B.

Today, more than four and a half years after we first launched the company, DoorDash connects customers with their favorite local and national restaurants in more than 600 cities across the United States and Canada.

What has been the proudest moments of your career so far?
In 2016, while I was still the Office Coordinator at Weebly, I was named Office Hero of the Year by ezCater. Office administrators don’t often get acknowledged for their work, so this recognition was truly special for me.

I started at DoorDash as the Office Manager but quickly changed roles to become our team’s first HR person. We saw massive growth in such a short period of time that we opened a second office and even outgrew that space in mere months. In December 2017, DoorDash was named Phoenix’s #5 Best Place to Work. This recognition reaffirmed what all of us at DoorDash already knew — we’re one of the valley’s best-kept secrets of the tech community. I’m grateful to have been a part of what we’ve already accomplished and I’m excited for what’s next.
