Today we’d like to introduce you to Damion Ross.
Hi Damion, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started out as a musician in the 4th grade learning to read sheet music. My first instrument was a tuba so it’s safe to say I could always hold a beat/tempo. My instrument was destroyed in a house fire my first year in which forced me to switch over to percussion, As I developed through the years, I participated in everything from marching band in parades and half-time field performances (I also played football so I never left the field) to symphonic competitions and holiday concerts.
Music had always been a passion of mines until college when I was required to make a choice between athletics and band. My major was kinesiology and sports management so I decided to join the track & field team as an athlete.
Fast forward eight years, college is over. I have a job within my “career” and I find myself yearning for more of a connection with music other than the 8+ hours I listened to it daily. I needed to be a part of the very thing that initially opened up my confidence trait. So, a couple guys I had become friends with since moving to Phoenix were on the DJ scene so I regularly would pop up their various sessions. This obviously inspired me. I took it upon myself to become a self-taught DJ. The foundation that I already had in music, specifically percussion, was the major key to my success from the beginning.
So here I am now, getting booked for various gigs in the area spanning from weddings to graduations to guest appearances at nightclubs and bars around the city with my favorite day of the week being “Mellow Wednesdays”, my weekly residency at the two North Phoenix Mellow Mushroom restaurants!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every road has its detours, potholes, and tempting rubbernecking moments to derail you from your ultimate goal. The biggest one for me was understanding patience and learning what to do with it when it comes to being a new artist. I have learned more so than ever that consistency is what will establish ground for me. Always being able to express my work to the masses without hesitation has helped me grow into being even more confident about what I am able to do. It literally also humbles me in the same moment know that I have room to grow and things to improve on. I couldn’t ask for a better to express myself in one that inspires me to always do better.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My name is Damion “Breauxx” Ross and I am a DJ in the Phoenix, AZ area. I specialize in playing house music along with varieties like bass & techno. I have a weekly residency “Mellow Wednesdays” established at Mellow Mushroom Happy Valley & Mellow Mushroom High St. where I am partnered with Franklin “DriiHeat” Scott to bring a midweek cool down for all the hard workers like myself who may need a breather. The night boasts half-priced drinks & appetizers as well as new local guest DJs to play alongside us to bring awareness to the underserved amateur community. I am most proud of the energy that I bring EVERY SINGLE set I play because of pure enjoyment. Each one has always been different yet it still hits me the same way when I play songs that beat to my internal drum.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I tend to use the Notes app within my phone to help gather myself and thoughts as I make my way through my week. I have such a busy day that I found myself spending unnecessary time racking my brain for the best ideas I had thought up hours prior, wasting time. So, my Notes put a serious halt to that, in combination with utilizing the Calendar as well.
