Meet Dai Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dai Baker.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dai. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am originally from Ann Arbor, MI but relocated to Tempe, AZ in June 2018. Getting used to different desert and mountains and sunny days were rough at first but now I enjoy it. I relocated as I was looking for a change of scenery and warmer weather. My interest in marketing and branding began during my undergraduate years while studying public relations.

Since the industries overlap and are very vague, professors encourage you to find a niche. I quickly found my passion within marketing and branding. At the beginning of my junior year of undergrad, I launched my own marketing and branding agency. In December 2016, I graduated with my bachelors in Public Relations with honors. In December 2019, I will graduate with my masters in Integrated Marketing Communications. I would love to pursue a PhD in communications and become a professor at a university.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My life has not been a smooth journey. I became a mother at a young age, which caused me to have grow up quicker than expected. But because of my early adventure into motherhood I became a stronger person. I often refer to my daughter as my unexpected miracle. Because of her, I accomplished a lot in my early adult life. I did not want being a young mother to be the reason why I was another statistic. Even now being a mother and a business owner can be challenging as both roles require a lot of attention. Owning a business is far from easy and always comes with challenges. Since my agency is only going into the fourth year we are still in the startup stage. Since I have a team if business is slow I still have to run payroll which means I have to come up with the funds out of my own pocket.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Dai Baker Creative Group – what should we know?
I own a marketing and branding agency. My clients are mostly small businesses and freelancers. I serve as the lead strategists on all projects. I have an in house graphic designer that does all the graphics work for projects. My assistant handles business administrative tasks and conducts any background research we need done. We also have various interns each semester, mostly for marketing or graphic design. I primarily handle the website development and design, brand strategy, marketing strategy, and public relations work. My agency also serves as public relations representative for entertainment and influencers along with businesses who want a media contact. I enjoy strategizing and developing brands over designing. I am thankful to have an amazing team that assists me. I am known for creating new brands through strategic brand development and visual designs. I absolutely love working with my clients and being able to explore my creativity. Our agency is different than most as we pride ourselves on educating our clients through the process and how our services will help grow their business. We never allow our clients to invest in services that their businesses are not ready for such as public relations services.

How do you define success?
I personally define success as overcoming an obstacle, achieving a goal and/or making an impact. Some failures could be considered a success if a lesson was learned. I do not like to think of failures in terms of losses but I like to view them as successfully lessons learned. On my next attempt, I understand what not to do and have a better chance of getting the results I desire.

I have a hard time considering myself as a successfully person. I do think I have had some success but I do not think I reached the level of success I truly desire. I am not done accomplishing everything I have envisioned for myself academically, personally or professionally.
