Meet Dafni Milan of Queen Creek

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dafni Milan.

Dafni, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up with both my parents as collaborative artists and have been surrounded by art my whole life. Through homeschooling, I was able to finish high school early so I’ve been painting professionally for the past few years. I found my voice while attending my parents art school, the Milan Art Institute. I learned many different skills and developed my own style from the techniques I enjoyed the most.

Has it been a smooth road?
Finding my voice came very natural to me. I felt like I tapped into a new level of myself that I didn’t know about before. I struggled more with focusing and making painting my top priority. My mom, Elli Milan, was the main teacher of the program I attended and she really pushed me to work hard and accomplish anything I set my heart on. Most of her adult life, she has been a professional artist full time, as well as my dad, John Milan. Through their life experiences, they have showed me there is a way to be successful doing what you really love.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am 16 years old and I paint full time. I create large oil paintings with many mixed media layers underneath. I love to see people who truly know who they are. People who are confident in themselves and who aren’t afraid to be vulnerable. I believe true beauty is found between the standards society sets for us. Beauty is found in all of the things that make us each individual and unique. I try to show that through my art in a subtle open ended way, allowing the viewer to decide what the painting means to them.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I wouldn’t do anything different, if I had the chance to start over. I feel like the way I evolved and progressed as an artist was very natural and happened just as it should have. In the beginning my career wasn’t very eventful, but it gave me a few years to focus and solidify my style.
