Today we’d like to introduce you to Daetriel King-Bey-Hayes.
Hi Daetriel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hello Loves, my name is Daetriel born TX, raised IL, adulthood AZ. Hair and fashion are a ridiculously huge part of my identity. Braiding Hair has been an income of mine since I was 10. Graduated from Cosmetology school in 2008 but my teacher took my folder. And I already completed my school hours so I couldn’t take my stateboards til my teacher located my folder 2011. In the meantime, I went to Fashion Marketing school then graduated Aesthetician School. By the end of 2012, I was duel licensed and have a fashion background. Became a Speed Waxer for European Wax Center, then made a job to present at the salon I desired. I worked for Elysium til I met Tiffany Benson. Her Showcase, the Arts Show, was LIFE CHANGING!!! I never thought I’d be taken seriously as a model because I’m 5ft and at that time, over 160lbs. 2015 isn’t as forgiving as 2023, lol. Any who I quit my job immediately. Then came into the industry using my HMUA skills as a networking gate while taking on photoshoots to practice. Lana May, Trampalina Fashion & Arabella shaped my first entire first in the industry. By the end of my second year, I began coaching other models and became a creative director on various photoshoots. I began working with Parkwood, wrote for a magazine at NYFW, and was an admin for ACP Arizona Creative Professionals learning directing and modeling from some of AZ best. Documenting that journey solidified me as a director. Trampalina brought me on as a Runway Director, and I was in LOVE!!! After helping win a few competitions for their team, I branched out and created my own Theatrical Runway Team. We won several competitions between 2017 and the end of 2018. Although my career was going AMAZING, my personal life was extremely tumultuous. Therefore, I had to chill and get life together. I did exactly that taking a year off. During that time, I had an extremely hard pregnancy, and as soon as I was healed and ready to come back COVID hit. Therefore, I became good at social media and created art there. Now, I incorporate both social media and an in-person Runway Team.
Nowadays I am the fearless leader of LASHDΛE, a modeling Collective that Builds Confidence & LASHDΛE Studio. My main services are Locs, Braids & Vibrant Color at LASHDΛE Studio (www.Vagaro.com/LashDae) as well as Colorful Strip Lashes sold online at www.LashDaeLLC.com. LASHDΛE provides modeling coaching, creative directing, HMUA, on-set assistance, etiquette & social media classes for anyone who wants to learn. I recently was HMUA for the Million Dollar Diamond Pageant & Council Woman of Chandler wore my lashes 🤩. I’m so glad to be back and doing what I love as a full-time entrepreneur. Although LASHDΛE is a new brand the work we have done this far has been great for the confidence of our model and upcoming models.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not being able to take state boards til years after graduating Cosmetology School was definitely a hindrance. Navigating my way through the industry while being abused at home was difficult. I have hyperpigmentation so I thank my lucky stars I’m an MUA lol, water shoots had me shook though. Not having money but making runways happen was a struggle. AND I did it as a Diagnosed Bipolar Person. Other than that usual industry shenanigans, I’m pretty sure everyone experiences
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am most proud of the models I started on the runway that now have their own brands and teams. What sets me apart from others is I TRULY LOVE WHAT I DO AND THE PEOPLE I DO IT FOR / WITH. I do what I do to build confidence and help dreams come true. People should know THEY CAN HAVE IT ALL. Because of my love for genuine people, I encourage building on individual uniqueness. My coaching is customization of models based on their unique qualities. Therefore, my team “Looks Different” yet they are mostly entrepreneurial models and actresses. I treat my models and clients with the utmost care, providing excellent services, giving gifts, letters of recommendation, and custom clothing. I pay my dancer and am working toward paying my entire team, models included, for every runway, shoot, and show. LASHDΛE helps with networking and building teams to help each other with events. When at other events I am constantly suggesting the models, I work with to other paying creatives. Helping build the AZ industry is what I intend to do.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was very outgoing and fashion-forward. My family nicknamed me weirdo because I’m not like them, and yes, I am “Odd” by societal standards. When I was a child, I had to learn to fight. The first day of the first grade, I was stabbed with pencils, and the bullying never stopped. Because I was from TX, I had a very thick accent that wasn’t accepted by Chicago children. Needless to say, I learned to fight and form my own groups of friends with the other weirdos. Although I made good grades, I was constantly in trouble for talking too much and drawing my dreams or writing poetry instead paying attention. I sold wire rings 1st & 2nd grade, candy 3rd-5th, started getting paid for hair at 10; by high school, I had multiple jobs then got into charity, becoming the Grand Lady Of the Jr Daughters of Peter Claver. Although my psychologist insisted against it, my parents allowed me to participate in school fashion shows. From the time I was a child to now an adult I have made up runway choreo, saved HUNDREDS of playlist for different concepts, and showed everyone they have a SLAYER inside. So, I guess one could say I’ve always been a unique and ambitious person creating safe spaces for other unique people.
