Meet Cyndi Tendick of Shangrila Ranch

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cyndi Tendick.

Cyndi , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 1996 my grandparents were looking for a “retirement” project; they had been avid RV’ers and coming from Germany in 1960 they were familiar and comfortable with the naturism and nudity. Due to the dry climate they settled on AZ and bought Shangrila Ranch later that year and took over at the beginning of 1997.
My immediate family, mom, dad, older brother, sister and I moved out here in the fall and we have been here since.
Over the years the property has grown from 80 sites to approximately 160 including new mobile homes, park models, rentals, a new pool, expanded clubhouse and many amenities.
I have been working day to day operations for 11 years since I graduated NAU with a degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management and am now a managing partner with my mom, Patty Faber.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a business is never a smooth road and it is bumpier when you are working with family.
Another challenge that is constant is the negative perception that comes with nudism. We have built a great community and have support from a national organization as well as other clubs like ours across the country, but there are still people out there that do not think we should be permitted to enjoy the life that we do.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are a clothing optional Mobile Home and RV park. We have full time residents, day visitors, memberships, and over night accommodations. Our amenities consist of 2 pools, a hot tub, tennis/pickleball courts, a clubhouse, cafe that is open on the weekends, horseshoes, hiking and walking trails and weekly events including karaoke, DJ dances, water aerobics, billiards, and so much more.
We like to say that we are like every other campground that people go to, we just choose not to wear clothing when we are enjoying all the same activities.
There are 2 nudist resorts in the state of Arizona, the other is located in the Tucson area. Both businesses belong to our national organization, AANR American Association for Nude Recreation, which protects and promotes the acceptance and education of non sexual family friendly nude recreation.

I am proud to be a 3rd generation business owner and being part of the longest running ownership of the business. We are extremely active in our community, involved in our Kiwanis club as the stewards of our local community park, support our local schools through holiday food sponsorships, and advocates and supporters of our local fire department.

What’s next?
Right now we working on doing some infrastructure upgrades; after working with ADEQ and upgrading our water treatment system we are looking forward to some electrical work so we can accommodate bigger RV’s as the industry continues to grow as well. Also want to make some renovations of our current facilities a priority for the coming year.
