Meet Craig Root

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Root.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I first had a camera in my hand at an early age and have fond memories of working in the darkroom in high school and college. I started a successful skier portrait business in Colorado, was fortunate enough to take some amazing cultural and natural resource photos while working for the National Park Service in Utah and am honored to be featured in ten Colorado landscape calendars.

However, I enjoy architectural and interior photography the most because it’s the hardest form of photography to do well. No camera and lens is as good as the naked eye. It takes multiple exposures to correctly capture the interior light and window views of a home.

Photographing a gorgeous living room with incredible mountain views simply can’t be done in one frame. I combine ambient exposures with flash exposures and artfully paint them together in Photoshop. The result is super sharp, natural looking photos with colors that “pop.”

I shoot a ton of residential/commercial real estate and vacation rental homes in the Valley and have had the pleasure of photographing two Frank Lloyd Wright homes.

Has it been a smooth road?
For the most part, it’s been an incredibly smooth road as most people, thankfully, like my work. However, photography is subjective, and not everyone has appreciated what I do, and that’s OK. Licensing issues along with the “cheaper is better” crowd can be a struggle.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I specialize in Architectural and Interior photography. I don’t run HDR processing that most “run and gun” real estate photographers do that can often look “cartoonish.” I take multiple ambient and flash frames and hand paint them together in Photoshop.

The result is super sharp, natural looking photos with colors that “pop.” I’m a one-man business. I answer the phones, do the scheduling and take, process and deliver the photos. I offer great customer service and be counted on to provide a product that will be an asset to your brand.

Tell us about your childhood, what were you like growing up?
Super cool ;-), loved photography, hockey, fishing, skiing, music, etc.
