Meet Craig Malley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Malley.

Hi Craig, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Craig and I’m the owner and creator of Scottsdale Old School Bicycle Rentals. I grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona and I’ve ridden thousands of miles in the city as a kid and an adult. I’m a total bike geek and love riding and working on bikes. I’m also a child of the 1970s and 80s and have an undying love for the era. So, I decided to combine my passions with Scottsdale Old School Bicycle Rentals. Each bike has its own name and personality you may recognize from sports, music, or movies from the day.

I’ve been involved in the cycling profession and community for several years in a variety of capacities and recently retired. But, I got a little bored. I thought it might be fun to start of business and be my own boss. Of course, I have a lot of help from my family and friends!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were things that went very well but also a few bumps along the way. I feel very comfortable with what people need for cycling, maintenance, and how to make the delivery and pickup model work. I also have quite a bit of knowledge of the area, and its paths and canals.

A few of the bumps along the way were trying to teach an old dog new tricks…technology. It’s mostly been how to advertise on social media (still trying) and create a website. I also needed to learn the administrative side of starting and running a business. Again, I have had a lot of professional help along the way and have had some amazing friends.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I had the honor of serving the City of Scottsdale for over 29 years as a Police Officer. I spent more than half of my career on our bicycle unit which patrolled the downtown, parks, preserves, and paths. I was an International Police Mountain Bike Association instructor, an advanced police cyclist, and an instructor for the State of Arizona, as well as a certified bicycle mechanic for our City.

I taught hundreds of children about bicycle safety and conducted several bicycle rodeos. I also volunteered many hours for a City program that refurbished and taught community members how to work on bicycles. Outside of work, my hobbies included riding for a local cycling team, and several charitable bicycle rides and tours. I had a small business where I had a mobile bicycle mechanics service for several years as well. Most recently I worked in a local bike shop as a tech part-time after I retired. I am very proud to have served Scottsdale and its citizens in this capacity.

What makes you happy?
Fun family stuff, outdoors, camping, beers on the beach, 1980’s heavy metal and movies, sports, and of course bicycles. They bring back a lot of memories with my friends and family over the years and continue to create new ones.
