Meet Courtney Warren of AZ Open Water in The Valley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Warren.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
AZ Open Water started over 10 years ago, providing opportunities for individuals to race open water swim events in the beautiful lakes of Arizona. Any athletes wanting experience in the open water from triathletes to open water focused swimmers had an opportunity race in the Arizona lakes. After participating the in the events for many years and winning a couple series championships, I took over the company two years ago, with my wife. In this time, we have added new events and new lakes to our series each year. We have been working towards making our races more than just a local event, but towards showcasing a quality event that can host top level competition and athletes. With the growth of the company we have been selected to be the host of the 2018 USA Swimming Open Water National 5 k and 10 k Championship and the Junior National 5 k and 7.5 k Championship, here in Tempe in May.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Along the way, we have come across some bumps in the road. There are many organizations that work together to host swim events, and trying to get everyone on the same page, can be difficult. We also have provided new and interesting swim events, such as longer distances, relay races, and paddleboard races, which each need permits, insurance, and additional safety crew members to plan and implement. Coordinating events amongst all the different entities involved is not always easy. We have to collaborate with the forest service, Sheriff’s office, safety/lifeguard crew, and timing system personnel.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about AZ Open Water – what should we know?
We offer open water racing events in Arizona. We are one of the few in the country who provide an open water swim race series. We are one of the few organizations/places who host the Open Water Nationals.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Hosting a quality event with a fun and safe environment has been important to our business succeeding.
