Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Kovats.
Courtney, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
We recently opened in April of this year. As a mother of four that was staying home with two under three years old, I felt there was a lack of safe and easy places to take them that also were fun and affordable. I wanted to give the community something that would fill that void. TeenyTown Playland is a fun-filled area with eight themed houses that change on a regular basis. We currently have a Cafe, Grocery Store, Veterinarian Office, Fire Department, School, Service Station, House, and Construction Zone. All houses are filled with toys for learning and dramatic play to keep young minds growing and imagining. We offer private playdates, birthday parties, Craft and STEM Days, and Parent’s Night Out, in addition to regular open play. We have a comfortable seating area for supervising adults to enjoy, while their littles work and play! We are still in our first year of business so as you can imagine, there is a lot of constant change. We are very excited about the feedback we’re getting from the community and excited to continue to grow!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course not. There’s always growth and changes that you have to recognize and learn from. There have been some less than flattering reviews that we have dealt with some very slow days, and definitely struggles of balancing life and new business. We did our best to deal with reviews by changing anything necessary, offering free visits back and reconciling and issues as quickly as possible. We increased our advertising options and have been seeing a lot more word of mouth business which is very exciting. As for balancing work and new business life, I am lucky that my type of business does allow me to keep my children involved and even bring them to work with me, I also have brought on extra help to be able to manage the business more and even expand our business hours so the community has more options of times to come play.
Please tell us about your business.
We specialize in play for babies to preschool age. We are known for our dramatic play and craft options. I am most proud of the growth I see in children who come in regularly. Children who may have been shy or have issues sharing get better the more they come and are used to the environment. We are different from others because we are a small-family owned playland that offers toys and safety for even the youngest of kids.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In hindsight, I would have increased pricing and offered more deals, offered more birthday packages (which I recently started doing), and had improved the timing of the opening a bit better to have had a soft opening before our grand opening. But even though we didn’t do that, I still feel like we will be a success.
