Meet Courtney Harper of Homewatch CareGivers of Chandler – Sun Lakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Harper.

Courtney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my career as a CPA in Houston, Texas working at Ernst & Young and then Anadarko Petroleum. My husband, Josh, and I raised our daughter, Logan, in Houston to be near family. In 2017, I became severely ill and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, a debilitating chronic illness. This diagnosis was a defining moment in my life. Everything about me and my capabilities changed overnight. I was out on medical leave for several months and my mother-in-law moved in to be my caregiver during the time. I quickly realized that I would never be the same as I was prior to this diagnosis. Extreme fatigue and so many other physical symptoms made it hard to function on a daily basis. The new reality took a toll on my mental health as well. Anadarko was sold in 2019, the same year Logan was set to move to Colorado for graduate school. My husband and I were ready for change and decided to move to Arizona for a fresh start. A key part of this decision was the presence of Mayo Clinic in Phoenix. We moved to Arizona in 2020, during the height of the pandemic. I started a new job in corporate accounting working remotely. I hoped that the remote arrangement would help me better manage working full time with my illness. Soon, I came to the realization that the corporate world was no longer a good fit for me. In addition to struggling to keep up with my daily schedule in the corporate world, I could no longer find meaning and fulfillment in my accounting career. I needed to find purpose in my work again. I wanted to feel like I made a positive impact in the world at the end of each day. I decided to become a business owner because I needed the flexibility that I could only find through being my own boss. I also strongly desired to create a workplace with heart, one that values flexibility and inclusiveness. After considering various opportunities, I was introduced to Homewatch CareGivers in 2023 and felt immediately connected to the mission. As someone who once needed a caregiver myself, the opportunity to provide this service to others filled my heart with passion and purpose again. I opened Homewatch CareGivers of Chandler – Sun Lakes in January 2024. Almost two years later, I still wake up each day energized by our purpose and the opportunity to make a difference. I have been blessed to work with inspiring caregivers and a network of referral partners connected by a shared mission.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road from CPA to entrepreneur has been filled with challenges. Just prior to leaving the corporate world, we adopted a teenager. Being a first time business-owner while supporting a teenager with complex trauma has been incredibly challenging, and fulfilling at the same time. I expected my health to magically improve once I left the corporate world. Instead, I was faced with several setbacks in my first year of business that kept me away from the office for weeks. I’ve had to master the art of letting go of the things I can’t control. It’s also been challenging to transition from a narrow role in accounting to being responsible for every aspect of a business. While I absolutely love it, I’ve had to learn what I’m good at and what I need to delegate. I didn’t get that right the first time, it’s a continuous learning process.

We’ve been impressed with Homewatch CareGivers of Chandler – Sun Lakes , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re a non-medical home care agency serving Chandler, Sun Lakes, and the surrounding areas. We bring trained caregivers into the home to help with the real, practical things that become harder with age or illness such as bathing, dressing, mobility, toileting, meals, medication reminders, transportation, attending doctor appointments, errands, companionship, and memory support. The work looks different in every house, because every family’s situation is different. What doesn’t change is the reason we’re there. We step in so families can stay families, so tired spouses can rest, so overwhelmed adult children can keep their jobs, and so the emotional weight of caregiving isn’t carried by just one person alone.

Several things set us apart from other home care agencies in the area.

One, we are part of a franchise but feel like a family-owned business. I am a very hands-on owner and know our caregivers and clients well. I value authenticity and transparency in all I do.

Two, we don’t have minimum hour requirements. We provide care that fits the needs of each individual client.

Three, I utilize my background as a CPA and strong relationships with local financial partners to design financially sustainable care plans.

And four, we lean on technology to support connection. Our Homewatch Connect system provides automatic reminders for appointments and medications, facilitates wellness visits with family, caregivers, and medical providers, and much more.

Brand wise, I’m most proud that people trust us not just for care, but for peace of mind. That’s what I want our readers to know. We’re not here to just check boxes. We’re here to preserve dignity, reduce caregiver burnout, and keep the joy in family relationships intact. Care is something readers might never plan for, but when it comes, it helps to have a partner who gets it at a real, human level.

Mostly, I want readers to walk away knowing this: asking for help isn’t failure. It’s strategy. It protects relationships. And the best care happens when it supports the whole human, not just the daily to-do list.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up in a small town in south Georgia. My favorite memories are tied to driving my golf cart around town with my friends, while randomly stopping to visit someone or jump in a neighbor’s pool. The simplicity of life at that time will always be treasured.
