Meet Corinne Brown of Cowboy’s Mirage in Downtown Phoenix

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corinne Brown.

Corinne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a 22-year-old singer/songwriter from Glendale. I front a band called Cowboy’s Mirage. Cowboy’s Mirage consists of Chase on lead guitar, Sam on bass guitar, Jared on drums, and myself as the lead vocalist. My boyfriend Sam formed the band a little over a month ago. He originally fronted it, and then decided to hand it over to me! I’ve been a vocalist my whole life, and I’ve always used writing as a creative outlet. This is my first time being in a band and sharing my material with others. I still find it hard to fathom how insanely cool it is to hear my writing come to life with instrumentals. Aside from my own writing, we have plenty of songs that were written by other members of the band/songs we’ve all contributed on. I work with amazingly talented musicians.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This is a great question! First of all, when I instinctively joined the band it was a week and a half before our first show at Club Red. I couldn’t believe that I had to learn a total of eight songs in such a short span of time. In order to grasp everything I didn’t know, my band and I practiced in the studio every minute we could. I ended up dragging myself to work on 3 hours of sleep, but it was totally worth it. We ended up killing our first show, and it was also my first ever performance.

In addition, we have struggles just like any other band has. The writing process isn’t always a breeze, and fine-tuning the structures of our songs can definitely be a challenge. In the end, we make it all flow together and it definitely pays off.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Cowboy’s Mirage – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
In Cowboy’s Mirage, I am most proud of our ability to put together a song within a very small amount of time. When we had our first show, a lot of our set consisted of songs we had just put together a week prior. We’ll either have something written already, or we’ll write while we’re jamming. Either way, something just blossoms and we run with it and make it our own. I’m also super proud of our sound because it is really different. We don’t want to box ourselves into one genre. Our songs have elements of grunge, old school rock, funk, blues, punk, dream pop, and R&B (just to list a few). We tend to merge grunge and funk together, and we created the term “Grunk.” I think what sets us apart from others is how diverse and experimental we are with our sound.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I wouldn’t want to change anything. I believe that the impulsivity and spontaneity in how we began was crucial to who we are now. For me, it was a trip because I had never been apart of a band and I had never performed on stage. The chain of events leading to these experiences brought me a sense of belonging and a platform where I could unapologetically be myself. Fronting a band made me put myself out there in a way that I never would have been brave enough to do on my own. I love how chaotic and sporadic our beginning was and it is the reason I am doing what I love now.
