Meet Corey Deasy of Lumberjaxes Axe Throwing Phoenix in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Corey Deasy.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Over the last few years, I have been focused on new, innovative forms of entertainment in the Pittsburgh area. I opened the first escape room in Pittsburgh in 2014, followed by the first axe throwing venue in September of 2017. After a 2017 trip to Phoenix, I absolutely fell in love with the region and immediately began looking for a space for competitive indoor axe throwing.

The first time I went to an axe throwing facility, I was with my 8 1/2 month pregnant wife — and she nearly won the tournament! My sister booked an axe throwing tournament for a group of 12, which included friends and family, and we were provided with an axe throwing instructor/scorekeeper. The event was a huge success, and soon thereafter I knew I wanted to be a part of the axe throwing phenomenon that is sweeping the U.S. and Canada right now.

Has it been a smooth road?
My past experience has certainly been a benefit to me since I’ve joined the competitive indoor axe throwing industry. For the most part, the road has been smooth. With that said, there are many challenges involved with opening a brand new business. It’s just part of doing business.

Prior to opening a new venue the biggest challenge is usually the navigation of building and zoning codes. After opening, marketing the business and developing a great team of axe coaches presents a brand new challenge.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Lumberjaxes provides the first competitive indoor axe throwing facility in the Phoenix region. Currently, the business is located in a 7,000+ sq. ft. facility in Tempe — one of the largest facilities in the U.S.

I specialize in bringing the latest trending forms of entertainment to areas in the U.S. that haven’t had a chance to experience it. I’m very proud that we are opening our second location in the Phoenix area just 4 months after the first location opened in Pittsburgh. We are absolutely thrilled to be in Phoenix.

Typically, what sets Lumberjaxes apart is the effort that we put in to giving our customers the highest level of service. With regard to the Pittsburgh location, our axe coaches often are mentioned by name in 5 star reviews. We have already begun assembling a great staff in Phoenix!

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
During my visits to the Phoenix area, I’ve noticed that the general population is very friendly. Phoenix is a city that seems to have a vibrant economy and great diversity. Also, it has been such a pleasure for us to do business with the City of Tempe, as everyone in the administration building has gone above and beyond to help us navigate the red tape involved with opening a business. Through my brief experience with the region, I would certainly recommend opening a business in the region.
