Today we’d like to introduce you to Colton Barry.
Colton, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in Arizona, I always had a creative nature and was an entrepreneur at heart. My first business was a lawn care and car washing company I started during the summers in grade school. My dad had a landscaping business so that’s where I got all the equipment from and my mom let me use her computer to design/print out business cards.
After high school, I had no clue what I wanted to do for education or a career. I ended up going to a community college for a couple years where I took some general courses to find my path. There I found my passion to be in graphic design, so I wanted to attend a college where its curriculum was more design-centric.
After college, I worked a few different design jobs where the highest position I held was Creative Director. I took the entrepreneurial leap in 2016 to start Colton Barry Design because I felt that if I didn’t take this chance while I’m young, I may not have the opportunity later in life. Currently, I’ve been able to get intertwined with great companies from a wide range of industries such as firearms, tech, food, and entertainment. Since I’ve been working with these companies their customer base and profits have grown at a rapid rate with the help of a well-positioned brand and customer focused website.
Today, I’m working on expanding and starting a design agency called Moby Creative. I look forward to the challenges and accomplishments the future holds!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s never easy leaving a full-time job where you have the security of a paycheck every week, but I knew this is what I wanted to do, and I had a decent number of clients that kept me afloat as I searched for more. I started to get comfortable with the amount of work that was coming in and that’s when the unexpected struggles hit hard. Now, I always try to push the boundaries for myself and business. Never be complacent.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
At Colton Barry Design I focus to help businesses of all sizes create genuine emotional experiences through strategy, brand development, and graphic design. I specialize in facilitating the branding process with clients who are looking to start a new company or rebrand entirely. The process is different for many people, but I’ve been following this; Conduct Research, Clarify Strategy, Design Identity, Create Touchpoints and Manage Assets.
I want to be known for helping people/businesses solve problems with creative solutions. I’m most proud when I see my clients succeed and grow. I’m grateful to help them build something they’re so passionate about. I like to think my work ethic and genuine care for my client’s wellbeing is what sets me apart from the others.
What were you like growing up?
As a youngster, my creative nature seemed to come from a mixture of things I did in my free time and with my parents. In my free time, I loved to use my imagination and build with Legos. If my dad needed help building something for the house I would help him, and my mom enjoyed when I would paint and draw with her. We have a lot of very talented fine artists in our family, but I didn’t seem to get that gene. I’ve come to find out my skills lie in conception and digital execution. I was very active growing up and played many sports. You would find me either at the skate park, playing baseball, golf, football, hockey, or at the dirt lot behind my house where some friends and I built jumps for our bikes. I was always trying to push the boundaries of anything I set off to do. Nowadays, I enjoy playing golf and drinking a cold one with the boys.
