Today we’d like to introduce you to Collin Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Collin. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
A lesson learned originally formed as a high school alternative rock project in 2010. It was reincarnated in 2014 by me and my acoustics. I became acquainted with the music scene and made many close friends. I grew fond of performing in the streets of downtown Phoenix and Mill Avenue. In August, I move to Ukraine to be an English teacher. I began performing in pubs and playing on the street hoping not to piss off the wrong group of Russians. In 2015, I accepted an internship that allowed me to tour Finland, Norway, and Denmark. Sometimes I played multiple shows a day and damn near sung in every park in Scandinavia. After I moved back to Arizona. I released my first album, Closer To Complete, in the summer of 2017, and have an EP due to be released in a month.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I don’t think that I have known anyone; personally, that has had what I would call a “smooth road” in music. Obstacles are inevitable. The ability to dust off your shoulders is a requirement in any field in order to thrive. From the start, it was difficult finding others with corresponding priorities, but I wasn’t about to stop. I am certain that I’ll be making music until the day I die.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the A Lesson Unlearned story. Tell us more about the business.
A Lesson Unlearned is a platform of support. It is also an excuse to spill my guts and call it “art.” Yeah, I consider myself an artist, but more specifically I am a writer. The message means everything to me. Each ALU song is riddled with subliminal messages. Layers challenge you to listen closer. Perhaps the tendency will resonate, and you may hear something in your life that you may not have otherwise.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It isn’t luck that I believe in. It’s karma.
