Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin Gribble and Kineticamity.
Colin and Kineticamity, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
The story goes…I moved back from the Midwest (North Dakota) from 2013 to 2017, from four years of solitude and very cold working conditions. I originally moved up there for a better opportunity. I had a great paying job with 401K and benefits, but no immediate friends, just roommates. That state statistically speaking has a 5% depression rate. Almost everyone drank alcohol, that’s just what you did up there. When it’s always overcast out you lack that Vitamin D. And I didn’t believe it until I noticed my mood start to change after a while, and I just missed my friends and family all together. The money was great but was it worth it? Worth the experience, yes, but I told myself “I’m not happy up here like I thought I’d be, money is not always the answer” I didn’t grow up rich or well off but my parents always provided for me and my siblings the best they could. I wasn’t used to making all that money so it kept me up there longer than expected… I learned that the hard way, then four years just flew by. I finally had enough of the cold and my previous job and moved back down to Arizona. It was hard to break away from that good paying job (Golden Handcuffs, let me tell ya) but I did what was necessary and it was for my overall happiness. (And I despised the cold at that point) Don’t ever move there unless you want to deal with negative 30 to negative 60 degree weather. Brrrrr.
Fast forward, I told myself “Go back to Arizona and do something great with your life Colin” and ever since I said that, things have been happening one after the next with this amazing dance. I took a trip to San Diego late December 2017 and was introduced to the style of dance called Shuffling by a very good friend.
Once I returned to Arizona, something inside burned to pursue this dance and I wanted to find out all about it. So I did my research and looked up as many tutorials as possible. On top of all that, it just felt amazing to move like this and without even knowing it yet that’s when I discovered my passion for dance and most importantly, shuffling.
Has it been a smooth road?
Shufflers block – Sometimes you just can’t find the strength to get up and go Shuffle and you’ll go days sometimes a week or more without shuffling and you just feel terrible inside. It’s a really sickening feeling.
Something happens to you when you find a passion and especially when encompassed by amazing music, You want to practice your craft 24/7, 365 because that’s all that matters.
The “I’m not good enough mentality or attitude”- This is another toxic thought that tends to enter our mind at times, I strive and try my best to push a saying “Good Vibes Only Boss” Literally repeating this phrase in my head every day has made my life so much easier when negative thoughts creep up, depression is a real thing, and it can be scary.
I choose to not let it in and stay happy, healthy and positive with a reminder to myself, “Good Vibes Only Boss”
Wanting to practice constantly but you have to rest because this dance can make you tired ( it can be a total workout, if done to higher BPM’s).
Being late for work because you wanted to Shuffle more, Haha (totally worth it!) It’s a true addiction, but a healthy one. Pushing a dance movement that all you want to do is be apart of it and spread the word but people don’t take it seriously…(YET) But they will. This is the next Zumba I’m telling you now. Shuffling it going to change the world along with EDM, It’s all becoming more mainstream and known to the public and Dance is even healthier than running according to scientists.
Tell us more about your work.
Through my Instagram page alone I push and spread good vibes, tips, and energy through my posts, highlights and stories. Instagram, when used correctly, can help people in so many ways. It is one of the best platforms around right now. I guess you could say I specialize in Shuffling and making people feel good, that’s what I’m known for in the EDM culture and shuffle dance scene. I’m the guy who records everyone and sends it to them for memories’ sake.
To me, this dance is so life changing and it’s a part of history with this movement and all that’s currently happening that I cannot just stand by and watch, I have to record. I just have to. My shuffle crew, Kinetic Amity is my pride and joy! We’ll be one year old in January. So it’s been such a huge accomplishment. We post videos on our Instagram page to spread even more awareness for this dance and to show people that we’re a family of shufflers that have a passion to move and groove.
We are currently the biggest active shuffle crew in Arizona, which is something to be very proud of. What am I most proud of, for Kinetic Amity, bringing all these people together and making us a tight close knit family. That never would’ve happened had I not started this crew. I’m also proud of how bad ass we’ve all become.
What sets me and my crew apart from others? I and we don’t give up. I’m not stopping until I’m gliding on that dance floor someday. And I know my crew knows what I mean by that because we’re all in the same boat. We all want to keep getting better and better and continue to show off our amazing talent to the world.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Well, to add to the sauce. I recently just became a member of a troupe to Arizona’s longest running EDM festival production company which has been around for ten years. Relentless Beats if you’ve ever heard of them? They hold all the big EDM festivals at the Rawhide event center in Chandler Arizona and other venues around the Tempe and Phoenix area as well.
They started a troupe called “The Weird and Wonderful Cast” and I entered a casting call in early November. And it turns out I got the part! out of 90 applicants. There were others selected as well for different talents.
The goal is to have performers and interactive characters in the festivals sort of like how Insomniac does at EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival) I see myself working with RB (Relentless Beats) for years to come as long as they’ll have me. I want to eventually have some of my shuffle crew Kinetic Amity perform with me as well in the future. I plan to push the Shuffle dance movement even further in Arizona until its a recognized style of dance. And it will be I can promise you that.
No other production company that I am aware of has Shuffle dancers performing for multiple festivals like I will be doing in 2020 here in Arizona. However it has been done before, I am not the first to do this. Shuffling will be showcased which has been a dream for a lot of us in the community, and to get paid for it is a dream come true.
I’m going to be a catalyst for this Shuffle movement. By doing this I hope to set a trend, I will say that I plan to get plenty of footage to show the other communities and production companies the possibilities of what I’m going to be doing with this. This is absolutely huge for this dance and the community.
