Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Lynn.
Christy, before we jump into specific questions about your art, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started producing Burlesque Shows and teaching classes in Burlesque 15+ years ago. It all happened by accident. I was a dancer in this show at the time that was supposed to be booked in a local casino. It was a vegas style show called “Extravigance” that had beautiful costumes and a lot of potentials but unfortunately was mismanaged. We did a soft opening at Club Downtown in downtown Phoenix and while performing there the manager told me that they were re-building a club next door to the venue that had burned down and wanted to turn it into a burlesque club. I got some dancers together and started a show called “Scandalesque” and we made our debut at the club that’s now called “Palazzo”. At first, when we started the show was like a dance recital with off the rack costumes. It was terrible! I didn’t know what the true meaning of burlesque was at the time. I did more research and found this amazing lady who happened to be a burlesque legend from the 60’s known as “Satan’s Angel”. She taught me about the true art form as well as costuming.
Then I hired on a gymnast that performed aerial acrobatics and started adding specialty acts to the show and then it became a production company. I did that for 10 years taking the show to various casino’s, theaters and we were even on TV (America’s Got Talent, Real House Wives of OC, Vegas Stripped Travel Channel). In 2013 I lost my father to suicide, went through a divorce and then dissolved my company (due to conflicts with former partners). I decided to start my own company and move to Los Angeles and work independently. I was very inspired while living in LA and worked with some amazing artists. Recently I moved back to Phoenix and had a baby and am now back at it again producing shows and teaching classes as “Pyrrha Sutra Presents”.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Not at all… So many “lessons” I’ve learned. Where do I start? I could write a book! From Also, growing up Mormon in Mesa AZ (which frowns upon Burlesque and/or anything of that nature… there’s a giant statue of my Great Great Grandfather in front of the temple; also my uncle Louis Crandall was the founder of Legend City (AZ’s first and only theme park; so there are some deep roots in the church and entertainment field when it comes to my family.
I also lost some very close family members and friends the past few years all in a tragic way…. My father, three of my cousins and a very good friend of mine and famous UFC fighter “Ryan Jimmo”.
We’d love to hear more about your art.
I run two entertainment companies. Azalea Artz (Performing Arts and Decor for corporate and weddings…. From dancers, musicians to floral design) and Pyrrha Sutra Entertainment (nightlife entertainment for venues, private events and casino’s consisting of choreographed burlesque shows with live music, dancers and specialty acts).
What were you like growing up?
I was a nerd… Was bullied quite a bit in elementary school. I loved the arts and animals; those were my outlets. I studied classical dance and was in orchestra and marching band all through high school. So I didn’t have much of social life.
