Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Wills.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Christopher.. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been managing Rashad for five months and it started as a friendship. I moved here from Virginia and I would see him once a week and would check on him. Eventually, we chilled at my house one day and started our friendship. From there he would invite me to his shows but I never decided to go. In December he invited me to his air bnb party and his headline show and I decided to go. When I went to his show I seen the excitement he had for performing and looking at the crowd they was so into it and I was surprised. I didn’t approach him about his music because I really don’t know too much about music so I just went about my business. On January 1st, I received a text message asking if I can be his manager. Not knowing music, I explained that to him but looked at it as being a big brother teaching him from my mistakes. And that is how we got to the point we are now.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This road has its ups and downs just like every other business. But I will say we plan to have more ups than downs. The way I manage is we plan out every month and use our mind to influence a plan that would make sense between both of us. Money is not the first option is seeing the big picture before we spend money. I am also big in relationships with people. The more we network the more we understand what is needed so that we know what the outcome should be. With this motto of course, we go into situations in which we thought would go right but in that split, second things go south. For instance, our first club appearance didn’t go well at all.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Currently, I work for Microsoft and with my spare time, I am a manager for King Tut King Shad. We are working on creating a label under BTS but we are putting the pieces together to eventually get everything in motion. Of course, I wouldn’t say I know everything or would be classified as a manager but what I specialize in is understanding what it takes to get to the success that we want to achieve. Success is not valued at how much money you have but how much money can you keep. Is what we doing now going to create wealth for our future family. If not then how can we get to that point. With this motto, we have created a bond in which we understand each other.
What I am most proud of is seeing my artist smile at the success that we have created. Granted I don’t know too much about music but he has taught me a lot. I never recorded a song but when we are in the studio you would think I know what I am doing. SO seeing my artist grow and seeing him understand the things I explain is what makes me happy. Money doesn’t make me happy because I am doing well for myself. What sets me apart from every manger is that money is not the main source of our company and our future. I see a vision that one day we will make it but if we don’t control what we have now, when we do make it we will lose everything. This management was built off genuine friendship that was built respectfully not using one another for success. In the same sense, I show king tut that if this doesn’t work you need to be able to provide for yourself. Live, Eat, Take care of yourself is all the things that I teach him. I am more of a big brother then a manger so our relationship just flows.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Personally, with my success I want to say I have a number of genuine friends and if I start naming them, I might miss someone and they will be mad. But since January, I have built relationships with a lot of different people. Engineers videographers photographers you name it. What also plays a big role in my success is my 9-5. I use my people skills and my knowledge to implement them in Music Management. Talking to customers in regards to there million-dollar projects is the same when trying to get interviews or find studios and engineers. I tell my artist every encounter you have whether it be good or bad we will find a way to turn it into a positive in which will then turn into success. For example as of January first my artist had 3500 followers on Instagram. Now we are over 11.7k followers.
