Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
College administrator, media coordinator for Ralph Nader, construction worker, off the grid survivalist, all unfulfilling… the toughest thing was to finally break through the belief that “Artist die on the vine” ..I have been creating photos since I was four years old. 30 years ago, I picked up the cameras in earnest and never for a moment regretted it. Large, medium, and small formats in film during complex lighting assignments sparked my imagination. I’m self-taught, often referring to graduating from the “School of Polaroid.”

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
What sets me apart from others is the great degree of competency that I have in a variety of photographic disciplines. Many years ago, when I arrived in a small cow town somewhere in the middle of ArizonaThe economy was greatly depressed. I realize that if I were to survive as a studio owner and make a good living, I would have to become very competent just about anything I could do. Product, Advertising, Editorial, Weddings, portraiture, Kids, dogs, Ducks, chickens, I had to learn to do it all. So, I did. Well, maybe not ducks and chickens but definitely horses! So, when it came time to photograph food, for instance, I did. So far, I’ve shot almost 30 cookbooks in my career. So, competency and versatility are what you should take away from this.

We always love to ask about the support network – have there been people, perhaps mentors or advisors, who have played a big role in your success?
Mom gave me my first camera when I was four years old, it was a brownie HawkeyeWhich I still have today! But, what do mothers know? Of course, imagery is everywhere, and while I may give reference to a myriad of great photographers, remember, “What you see is what you will be.”
