Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian Skidmore.
Christian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Creativity is something very personal to me – as it should be to all of us. We’re all individuals trying to find a sense of who we are and express that within our work, as artists.
“It’s all so big, you know. The world is so big and everything is just so untouchable and unreachable that we just wanna do something that we can be a part of.”
I am the Boomerangbro.
Though I may get copyright claims from Nintendo at any moment, I can still claim the title for the time being. I started developing my brand early on in high school as a side project to document moments, memories – past and present – and any passing thoughts that I’d have, no matter how insignificant. In every class, there’s always that one kid that draws on their desk to pass the time. I was that kid. My friends would always ask me if I could draw them self-portraits, so I usually spent a lot of my time experimenting with new mediums to help finesse my artistic style. It kinda started my love for incorporating realism into my artwork.
I remember one of my most memorable moments was buying myself an Intuos tablet. It opened up a whole new realm of possibilities through online artistry. I was always the one following Instagram profiles that showcased slideshow tutorials on how to draw the “perfect eye” or landscape, but now it was in my ballpark of expertise to finally start shaping my aesthetic.
I’ve always been someone who’s wanted to create an impression, but too introverted to express myself verbally. Now that I’m a year from receiving my Bachelors in Advertising with emphasis in Public Relations, I’ve learned how to create value through my passions for art. Whether it be sketching scenery while hammocking, or photographing my friends exploring new locations on our various escapades, I hope to capture the nostalgia. The past – present – future.
Inspiration comes from whatever you’re feeling, who you’re around, and experiencing the world revolving around you.
Has it been a smooth road?
Phoenix is full of many talented artists. Being in a major that is highly grounded within the fine arts puts into perspective the amount of creative minds we have in our communities. In that regard, it can sometimes be hard to set yourself apart stylistically from the hundreds of other photographers and artists trying to capture the same emotions you are. At the end of the day though, it hardly matters in my eyes. As long I’m creating something I’m proud of, using the tools that I have, I would call that a success.
With Creative Cloud being the standard for artists today, I’m someone who is still getting used to the new technology that’s being released every day. It has been a constant endeavor absorbing all the new updates and languages that creators have to adapt to. Three years ago, I found HTML and CSS overwhelming. As graduation looms in the distant future, I’m looking at sixteen completed credits of web design, so it’s definitely been a journey to say the least.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
My style is always known for being bright, with high contrast between cool and warm tones. Aesthetically, my brand accentuates as many colors as cohesively possible to create a piece that grabs the eye and evokes positive reactions. Though I hold knowledge in a variety of different mediums, I try and hold consistency as my main standard. I want clients to know what they’re receiving and what I have to offer when they reach out.
New opportunities. Incorporating a mix of varying styles across different eras or using new technology to take art to that ‘next level’. As my own creative, I like to set myself apart by building personal connections with my clients. Treating it as a friendship rather than a business really goes a long way.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Some of the most important characteristics to success in my opinion, is making personal connections to those around me, the community I serve and leaving a lasting impact. Throughout your life you’re always evolving and changing your style to fit you as a person. There’s always going to be external forces trying to break your mold. My advice is to find outlets that help bring out the best you. Whether it be friend groups, music festivals, or just chilling with mother nature, channel what you love and you’ll truly experience all the world has to offer. For me, art is that outlet.
“Follow your heart. Do what you love.”
