Today we’d like to introduce you to Chloe Allen.
Hi Chloe, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Essentially my story starts back in High School where I took Fashion Design for all 4 years. I really think that sparked the creative side of my brain and allowed me to express those ideas. In-between those years and today, I developed a passion for exercise and physical health. I was an athlete my whole life but once my collegiate career ended, I had to find something to fill that void. The deeper I got into the fitness community, the deeper I got into the fashion side of the fitness community. It seemed to re-ignite that spark in my little high schoolers brain to see the problems my clients and friends had with athleisure, and fix it. Thus, Aptitude was born.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey has definitely been a learning experience. I came into this industry with just an idea. I was a little blind and outdated so it took me a bit to catch up on fabrics, designs, manufacturers, etc. There was a lot of trial and error with our first couple products but that was the part of the process I absolutely loved, even if it was a huge headache. It makes the satisfaction of getting it just right, even better.
As you know, we’re big fans of Aptitude. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
A majority of my business is focused on our customers – what they want or need in their athletic attire. Which I believe most companies don’t take into consideration. They go for the latest trends that would sell, while Aptitude goes for functionality. We prioritize what the customer needs their athleticwear to feel and fit like, with being cute of course, but that also allows them to perform as needed. We are known for our high quality material, inclusive sizing, and universal fit. But what helps us stand apart is that our clothing is, and always will be, a reasonable price. You will never see a pair of leggings on our website for $90. And you will never put on a piece of our clothing that doesn’t form to your body. All our products are designed to fit the body you are in, which goes along with how the brand name was chosen.
The word “Aptitude” in French, means fitness. But the definition of “Aptitude” in English is “a natural ability to do something.” Putting my spin on the two, I believe every single person has the natural ability to be “fit.” What makes it beautiful, is that being “fit” looks different on everyone. Aptitude is the athletic wear that was created to make women feel the most comfortable and confident, however they choose to move their body. We believe everyone’s body should be celebrate for what it does, not how it looks. That’s the reasoning behind the brand.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I tend to be the person who works in silence, but during the process of forming Aptitude, it’s become apparent how important having a community is. A business is not successful if there is not people standing behind it, who believe in it. I am fortunate enough to have the most supporting family and friends but also online community. Aptitude’s success has definitely come from my online Instagram community – a place where I met some of my closest friends and biggest supporters. If my online community didn’t believe in me more than I believed in myself, Aptitude would still be a silly little idea. What I never expected, was the amount of support I would get through the local Arizona community. A good chunk of our sales comes from The Valley and it’s usually because they heard about us from a friend, colleague or local business. I’ve had a lot of opportunities to collab with other small businesses in the area and it’s such a great community to be apart of. It’s very refreshing to be around other people who take the time to support you and help your business grow.
