Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsey Erwin.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
At 10 years old I would wake up at 5:30am just to watch this draw-along TV show. At 15 years old I won 1st place in the district for my first canvas painting, in my first ever art class. At 17 years old I was accepted into an Art University, but pursued my full academic scholarship, courtesy of my 4.7 GPA. Today I “art” on a daily basis; with my two babies (3-months and 19 months) making paint footprints and abstract marker doodles, and as PhDesigns. Every wood sign is hand cut and crafted individually thanks to my unique woodworker. Painting various signs/ decor is my most highlighted feature, but I also work paint on canvas, ink and pencil drawings. So, I guess you could say art is just natural for me, but what doesn’t pay the bills, is often forced to the back burner. With my two degrees and pending doctoral degree, I like to consider myself the “Master” of art, hopefully becoming successful enough so that my babies may become their own ‘Masters’.
Please tell us about your art.
Basically if you can think it, I can create it. Any phrase, any design, any idea- I like to think I can make it a reality, paintbrush in hand. I primarily work with paint on wood to create various rustic signs/ decor, but also feature paint on canvas and ink and pencil drawings as well. To me, anything that is handmade is made with love and dedication because otherwise, why take the time? I like for my clients to think that I put in 100% more love and effort than something they could buy off the shelf. That includes how all PhDesign pieces are handwritten and never stenciled.
Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
Let’s face it, everywhere you look the world is trying to send a message; everyone has something to say about everything, even artists. Today the role of artists has become yet another platform, for the sarcastic, quirky, witty, and disgruntled. Political cartoons and signs with loud voices, the difference is that my art speaks to none of this. In fact, it avoids the national or international dismay that is often spreading and focuses on the complete opposite- happiness. My art is for those who simply want to brighten their day or make others smile with a sweet gift.
