Meet Chelsea Sieck

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea Sieck.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always been drawn to art and artists, basically anything or anyone not traditional. In high school I took art classes and knew I needed to do something in the art community. Since then I’ve dabbled in painting and more recently photography. I am a mother to a 6-year-old named Bowie, he’s in first grade and has autism. Being a mother is my greatest accomplishment and for the longest time I had trouble balancing motherhood, depression and my art so my work has been put on the back burner for a while. In just the last year I feel I’ve finally figured out how to give equal time to my art and family and thrive in both. My dream now is to be a professional photographer and show Bowie that you can achieve whatever you put your mind to.

Please tell us about your art.
I describe my photography as body positive, which means I adore and embrace people’s differences. Society says there’s a box we are supposed to fit into and my goal is the break that box open for everyone to fit. When I edit my photos, I don’t retouch anything on the body. I believe our “flaws” are what make us beautiful and interesting and unique. I hope that when I photograph people they see the things they normally don’t like about themselves and learn to love them. We all know we are our own worst critics and I just want people to see how amazing they are especially when they don’t fit into societal standards.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
I am not super involved with the art community but as far as social media goes I think it’s a great platform for artists to showcase their work. For that reason, I think it’s pretty easy to get yourself out there and get exposure online. I haven’t had any of my work in an exhibition or show but I hope to get there someday. I think cities should reach out to artists more often to collaborate and support their locals.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
