Meet Chelsea and Trevor Martin of Noms Bake Shop in Tempe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsea and Trevor Martin.

Chelsea and Trevor, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Noms Bake Shop is a family-owned business that started in 2015 out of the home kitchen in Scottsdale, AZ. After pulling dad out of retirement and pursuing a small hobby of selling cookies at local businesses and farmers markets, we found the response to our products to be overwhelmingly positive. Simultaneously, we were noticing an opportunity in the gifting world to create a gourmet product with a custom/personalized touch that was easy to give and memorable to receive. We developed gourmet cookie assortments that are shipped nationwide in customized gift boxes that feature our clients’ logos, messaging, photos, or other personalization that makes the recipient feel special and thought of. Since we’ve started, we have outgrown the home kitchen into a commercial baking facility, and we have opened up a corporate office and fulfillment center in Tempe that allows us to serve our customers quickly. We ship out gourmet gifts nationwide and cater to all sized of custom gift orders, whether that’s one gift for grandma or 1,000 custom gifts for a corporate holiday order.

Our company was started by family and we strive to treat everyone like family. With a simple, genuine mission of helping create and build meaningful relationships by delivering joy directly to the home or office, Noms seeks to bring more to the table than a typical cellophane-wrapped basket of crackers. We seek to make you a gift-giving champion and make your recipient feel extra special, even after every morsel has been devoured.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has anyone ever answered the former? Haha! This road has been more of an off-road, choose-your-own-adventure, now-go-back-and-try-again style of journey. Neither my husband, myself, nor his father or two sisters every had any experience in the baking or manufacturing industry, let alone have fully run our own companies. So, from top-to-bottom, we were in over our head from the beginning. Luckily, we all like a challenge.

From designing our own commercial kitchen facility to figuring out lot codes, inventory, how to customize boxes, how to customize a website, etc., we have had multiple “learning opportunities” along the way. 🙂

One of the largest challenges we have had since starting was actually figuring out who we were as a company. We started with the idea that we were a cookie company because that was the heart of our product. It took the shift in how we presented ourselves – a shift to presenting as a gifting company – to really help us better identify the clients that we are helping to serve. By doing that, we were then able to tap into the problems or pain points they were having with gifting, and that allowed us to better improve our products and services as a company. It sounds so simple, but it was a big moment for us.

Noms Bake Shop – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

I think as a company and family, we’re most proud of how far we’ve come together. Working with family can be tough because there is no direct separation from your day-to-day and your family time, but it’s so incredibly rewarding to see the growth that we’ve made each year from something we created together out of thin air. This isn’t just a journey we’re all on together; we’re actually building the road and figuring out what’s at the end of it.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I know this isn’t a “one-moment” type of answer, but thus far, it was last holiday season. When we moved to being able to ship nationwide 2016, we may be shipped one cookie assortment a week. Maybe two. When the phone rang, we often thought it was a mistake. Last holiday season, we had 15 people in the fulfillment center all day JUST packing orders to go out for the day. We hustled around, on our feet for 10 hours, and filled countless carts to the brim for the postman to pick up – these are things that sound so silly, but for us, it represented a milestone none of us saw coming a few years ago when we were all at our typical 9-5’s. It was a proud family moment that reminded us of how far we’ve come and where we have yet to go.
