Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanen Brizuela.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’ve always been artistic and loved color – the impact that it can have on people. There really is a psychology to color! From an early age I was involved in the paint industry, starting by assembling color presentation boards for the Property Services department at a paint company. Once management realized that I could put together color schemes in an appealing way, I moved up in the company quickly.
Upon moving to Arizona and starting a family, I decided to leave the paint industry and start my color consulting business. With work in many states and my growing family keeping me busy, I found I had the best of both worlds! Once my oldest son went into kindergarten, I decided to put my color consulting on hold to focus on helping to fundraise for his elementary school and only offering color consultations sporadically.
Now that my boys are older and able to see and appreciate how hard my husband and I work toward our goals, I feel that it has been the perfect time to create ColorBoss Design. This time, I focus on using my God-given skills and talents to give back to people in need with a portion of everything I earn through design going back to charity.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Everything worthwhile in life comes with a cost – whether it be a risk taken, a sacrifice made or a hurdle to overcome. But that’s what makes achievement so much more fulfilling! Transitioning from the paint industry to my own design company took hard work but with my faith in God, the help of a coworker who ran the financials, and patience I found that it was much easier than I expected!
Now so many years later and starting up again, I’m finding the challenge a little more difficult, as I’ve been out of the industry for a minute and not everyone knows who I am and what I offer. But I’ve risen to that challenge and have found that building connections throughout the property management industry and beyond is a huge part of the success of my business. Relationships come first and everything will fall into place after that. Patience and perseverance are key. It is extremely important to be in uncomfortable situations – they will always lead to growth.
I wouldn’t have changed how anything has happened as I’ve been able to be present for my family when they’ve needed me and am still growing into the business professional I am to become.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about ColorBoss Design?
ColorBoss Design offers paint color consulting services for both interior and exterior projects. With over 30 years of experience in the paint industry, I not only specialize in paint colors and applications but also the prep work and maintenance that must happen before a paint job begins.
I am trained in doing my own digital imaging which sets me apart from my competitors. Usually when you ask for renderings, there is a third party involved which takes more time and in turn, more money. But because I am able to create my own renderings, I have the luxury of being able to manipulate colors and placements on my computer screen – which ensures that what I present to my clients will always be the absolute best options.
Giving back is a HUGE part of why ColorBoss Design was created and what drives my passion. I am able to use my gifts and talents to assist people with their color needs but ultimately use a portion of what I earn annually to donate to charities and organizations whose causes align with my heart and where God pulls me. I’m proud to say that ColorBoss gives back to many organizations including Food For the Hungry – which creates 10-year sustainability plans for impoverished communities around the world, The Pink Door – who helps women that have been extracted from human trafficking situations adjust and acclimate to a life outside of such terrible conditions and situations, and the Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Center.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t think it’s been luck as much as it’s been my faith in God that has played a huge role in where I am today with my life and business. I wake up feeling so blessed with my husband and two boys in my life. They are my everything, my whole heart. Watching Sam and Noah, my sons, grow into who they are today has been a pleasure and privilege – and in turn, they have watched my husband, Mike, and I grow throughout the years. We make mistakes, learn from them, move on and always show love for each other along the way.
I call God my business partner. I find that when I slow down and try not to control every situation or outcome, that is when everything falls into place and happens organically. I feel that slowing down is key to grasping every bit of what life has to offer. Our fast-paced lifestyles aren’t sustainable! We were meant to slow down so that we don’t miss any moment or blessing that may be in store for us.
I feel so fortunate to have worked on all of the properties and projects that I have and can’t wait to do more with the talents that I’ve been given.
