Meet Chanel Godwin-McMaken of Boozed Hearts in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chanel Godwin-McMaken.

Chanel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started in the hospitality industry 11 years ago. I have always had a bleeding heart for helping people. Whether that is helping someone unwind from their day with a beverage or chatting with someone because that might have been the only time someone listened to them all day. I have been a craft bartender for four years. Most recently being with Little Rituals since the opening almost a year ago. At the beginning of 2019 during the Arizona Cocktail Weekend, I won the bartending competition Last Slinger Standing. Through all my time in the industry and experiences, I wanted to create a platform to normalize and humanize the people who make eating and drinking a possibility. That is when I created the podcast Boozed Hearts.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path has not been smooth but what path doesn’t have rocks in it? I have not focused on the downs but rather celebrated the ups. When a door doesn’t open for me, I just try harder.

Please tell us about your work.
Boozed Hearts is a “boozy heart to hearts” in the form of a podcast that I host. It is meant to get to the crux of the how’s and why’s of individuals in their positions. Whether that be industry professionals or individuals who like to partake in such activities. Sitting at the table bonds us, drinking opens us.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My grandma used to pick me up after school. We would go back to her house and bake cakes, play the piano, and make art projects until my mom was off work. I always had so much fun with my grandma because she encouraged my creative side.
