Today we’d like to introduce you to Chance Butler.
Chance, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
By way of background, I was given the name “Chance” because I was born with a 50/50 shot at survival. In my early years, it took me a while to develop a normal immune system, so I spent many days home from school on the couch. During this time, I was living with my grandfather and the rule was when I stayed home from school, I had to watch Good Morning America and then CNBC and stock market news with him all day. I became very much in tune with the markets during this time and opened my first investment account at the age of 6. I’ve been investing and helping others ever since.
I originally hail from Seattle but attended college in Pennsylvania. This is where I met my wife and we started our family. In late 2015, we decided to make a drastic change and move cross country to our current home in Queen Creek. I thought a major change of scenery deserved a major change in careers as well. I’ve always dreamed of owning my own business, so I decided to follow my passion for investing. I earned my Securities Law License and registered my firm with the Arizona State Securities Commission in 2016 and started onboarding clients at the beginning of 2017. True to form, I started with 0 clients, 0 assets under management and 0 prospects. This is very abnormal and unique in the industry. Crazy was muttered by quite a few people. During the time of this writing, I have 35 clients, about $1.5 million under my management and I have 10 clients signed up on my Financial Planning monthly retainer.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There is never smooth sailing when running a business!
My youthful appearance has been a big obstacle I’ve had to overcome during my entire professional career. I’m currently 31, not 18! I’ve dealt with a lot of C-Suite level executives during my professional career, and they made it painfully obvious they would not take me seriously at times. I’ve had to think of and implement creative ways around this obstacle for every position I’ve held and run my own firm has been no different. One of my solutions to this was to do something the Wealth Management Industry typically eschews: that is serving clients age 35 and under.
Another struggle I’ve faced is that I’ve never been responsible for bringing clients into the business. This was an entire skill set that I’ve had to develop. There has been tests and tweaks to my process, many failures and rejections, but through trial, I’ve developed a genuine approach that is fun and works well. I’m all about enjoying life, so why not make business the same?
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about InvestingUnder35 – what should we know?
InvestingUnder35 is an Independent Investment & Financial Planning firm. I chose to register my firm with the Arizona State Securities Commission as a Registered Investment Advisor, so I would be held to the Fiduciary Standard. This simply means I have to act in the best interest of my clients at all times, even ahead of my own, and I have legal accountability to do so. Most so-called “Advisors” are not held to this standard!
I truly believe that people with a passion can make a difference in the lives of others, and when I explored working for bigger name companies, I didn’t see that passion. I chose to start my own firm so that I could treat every client like the industry treats its million dollar clients!
I work with clients in one of two ways, either on the Investment Planning side or on the Financial Planning side or both!
Investment Planning is the creation of a goal, whether you are saving up for a house, having your assets pay you to go on vacation every year or you’re saving up for your non-working years, we can calculate out how much money you need to save and invest to accomplish this goal. I then do all the investing on behalf of my clients and with my clients while providing financial advice surrounding those accounts and how it affects your financial picture. I looked at how the industry treated its million-dollar clients, and I decided to treat all of my clients this way! I didn’t think it was right that the industry charged more for clients who had less,
Financial Planning I have set up as an Annual Retainer that is billed as a monthly subscription. This is incredibly unique to the industry. I give my clients a calendar of events, such as an annual credit score review, estate planning, and insurance check-ups, strategy sessions, benefits reviews, quarterly newsletters as well as an annual Christmas gift list that includes unique products from the businesses we own. I also provide investment advice on accounts that I can not bill from, such as a 401k with a current employer or 529 college savings account. Clients who are subscribed to this service receive a special discount to the Investment Planning fee.
I specialize in my rigorous investment approach. With over 25 years of experience, I am well steeped in Intelligent Investing, taught by Benjamin Graham and made popular by Warren Buffett. Today’s business schools teach that the stock market is an efficient marketplace, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. I read every financial statement put out by the businesses my clients and I own, I review their financials, and interview staff members via social media, personal connections and locally. It isn’t uncommon for me to follow and research a business for years before I am willing to own it.
My entire firm sets me apart from others in the industry:
1. I invest alongside my clients, which means we’ll own a lot of the same stocks. I’m the only advisor that does this and is willing to share their personal portfolio with clients.
2. I donate 2% of all revenue my firm generates to charity. Currently, I support Strong Against Cancer, and I’m hoping to develop relationships with local non-profits and increase the amount being donated.
3. I encourage my clients to not only save and invest but to joyfully spend their money. I want my clients to start businesses, enjoy life, travel, and change the world. Investing and financial planning make that all possible.
4. No Account Minimum – Investing is the second best way to build wealth(the first is your skillset) – so I do not require my clients to have hundreds of thousands of dollars in investable assets to help them.
I’m most proud of my fun and unique approach to money. I want my clients to enjoy the process of working with an advisor, so I show up wherever they are in life. Want to go hiking and talk about investing? Great! Love coffee? Great, let’s grab a cup, enjoy it and talk.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I’m going to throw you for a loop on this one and say being introverted. I love meeting new people and spending time with family, friends, and clients, but I avoid large gatherings like a plague. This has been extremely beneficial because I avoid superficial networking events and naturally focus on developing stronger more personal relationships with those I meet. I’m also perfectly fine sitting in my office and reading for 60 hours a week, which bodes well for our investments. Reading is a huge key to success, no matter what profession you are in. Doubly true for Investing.
