Today we’d like to introduce you to Chad Wills.
Chad, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I spent about 12 years working in business management and during that time I would continuously look for ways to incorporate my biology degree into my passion for sustainable farming. I would build aquaponic and hydroponic systems for personal use within my home, my kids loved watching fruit and vegetables grow atop a fish tank and in speaking with my wife, decided to take a leap of faith and farm microgreens.
In doing this, I learned there is a passion within our local community for nutrient dense microgreens and a demand from some incredible chefs. At that moment, I knew I could positively impact my community through greens.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being new to the game, there’s always challenges. As a small farm, we are always networking and creating meaningful experiences within our community, whether that’s at a farmer’s market, dropping off samples or word of mouth through supporters. However, through the grind, I remember to be flexible, humble and patient, which is certainly a key part of this journey.
Farming in the desert can have logistical challenges during the hot summer months and we pride ourselves in offering chefs various grow mediums for their microgreen selections. Some of our chefs prefer a live tray to cut from weekly, while others prefer harvested and packaged greens for a simplistic approach to their busy lifestyle.
Please tell us about Simply Micro.
Simply Micro is a small microgreen farm specializing in nutrient dense microgreens for kitchens, large and small. We love to educate consumers on the health benefits of microgreens and encourage them to incorporate them into everyday living. We inspire to supply these gorgeous greens to local restaurants and chefs across the valley to not only give their dishes a gorgeous garnish but a burst of flavor as well. We are most proud of maintaining our commitment of sustainable and responsible farming through various efforts of minimizing single-use plastics at farmer’s markets, natural sun growing and 100% organic grow mediums.
Is there anyone in particular you would like to recognize? Mentors, etc?
My wife is a key part of this family-owned operation and has a passion like no other. From the branding, social media efforts, communications with business owners and being out there impacting and educating our community, I couldn’t do this without her.
