Meet Casey Clowes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Clowes.

Casey, before we jump into specific questions about the organization, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am fortunate to have been raised and surrounded by powerful, impactful women in my mother, nana, and aunts. My mom brought my sister and I to meet Gloria Steinem when we were still in a double stroller and I participated in my first protest when I was 12 years old. I developed strong values of affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every person and respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are apart. My upbringing instilled an appreciation for helping others and advocacy. I quickly learned at a young age how government impacts people’s lives. This understanding drove me to pursue a life of public service.

I attended ASU and pursued a degree focused on community issues and service, studying Public Service and Public Policy. I went on to study environmental and sustainability law at Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at ASU because of my desire to advance innovative solutions to current issues by bridging the gap between legal realities and community needs. I decided to run for Tempe City Council to bring an analytical and caring perspective to the issues facing the city.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
As the youngest candidate in the race, I face the unique challenge of calming some fears about my age. In addition to explaining the values and issues I am running on, I must go further to help instill a sense of trust in voters’ minds. To some people my age is a liability I must overcome, however, I believe I will bring a fresh and needed perspective to Tempe, a city where the median age is 28 years old.

Tell us more about your organization.
I strive to run a values-driven campaign. It is important that everything I do be guided by a desire to improve justice, equity, and compassion in human relations. This impacts not only my policy decisions but also how we operate as a campaign. We operate from a place of respect, every voice is valued, and we work together as a team—often over pizza. We strive to have meaningful conversations with both Tempe voters and each other.
