Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Seay.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always been involved in the animal industry starting my career as a veterinary technician and fostering cats and kittens. While working as a veterinary technician I began to pet sit for our clients when they would go out of town and needed reliable care for their pets and many preferred someone that was able to properly medicate the pets if needed. In 2012, Carrie Pawpins officially launched. My client base and team of pet nannies who care for pet sitting clients has grown over the years and we pride ourselves on providing the best possible care for the pets while their owners are away.
I changed careers and began working for a veterinary supply company a couple years after Carrie Pawpins was started. This change allowed me the opportunity to take classes towards my degree in companion animal behavior.
Animal behavior has become a topic I am very interested in so that I can help pet parents solve behavioral issues they are experiencing with their cats and dogs. Once I completed my Master’s program in Companion Animal Behavior and Counseling I added pet training and behavior modification to the services I offer. I chose to focus mainly on working with cats since there are not as many resources for cats available and I knew I would be able to help. In 2016, Carrie Pawpins had grown to the point that I was able to quit my corporate career and work full time in my business.
I enjoy continuing to learn how to work with animals using force-free, science-based methods and have completed a number of continuing education courses and obtained certificates including CBCC-KA, Fear Free Certification and Low-Stress Handling Silver Certification. I enjoy teaching pet parents about preventing and resolving behavioral issues and have begun to offer classes around the valley for pet parents to attend. I am also a member of the Pet Professional Guild Cat Committee where we are working to provide education and resources for cat owners throughout the nation and world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When I first started my business the biggest struggle was needed to work another full-time job and not being able to put all my focus on Carrie Pawpins. It was difficult to build my initial client base so that the business was sustainable enough for me to leave a steady income. With the training and behavior modification services it has been a lot of work to educate people that there are resources available to help cats and that there are force-free methods that are highly effective with training both cats and dogs.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Carrie Pawpins – what should we know?
Currently, Carrie Pawpins offers pet sitting as well as cat and dog training and behavior modification. Pet sitting services are offered in North Phoenix and North Scottsdale by myself as well as my team of pet nannies. What makes the nannies different than other pet sitting services is the experience we all have in various areas of pet care. We offer pet sitting in the clients home in order to make the pets more comfortable not having to change their routine.
With training and behavior modification, I focus mainly on working with cats because there are not as many resources available for them and I truly enjoy working with them. I also provide training for puppies and dogs. My goal is to educate pet owners so that they are able to confidently manage and change their pet’s behavior. Training and behavior services are available valleys wide and phone consultations are also offered for long distance clients across the state and country.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel like my level of commitment and determination have been keys to my success.
There have been many times that it would have been easier to quit and go back to work in the corporate world, but I knew that was not where I needed to be in order to help pets as I do.
