Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmella Goslar.
Carmella, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I attended cosmetology school back in 2007. I was always more on the creative side… college wasn’t my thing. After finishing, it would be almost ten years later before I stood behind the chair full time. When I finally decided to go for a career full time in the salon, my whole world changed. I bought a small salon I had worked at part-time for seven years back in 2017. It was a great stepping stone but it never felt like me. I was stuck with what to do… unsure if I wanted to grow, afraid of failure really. Then two years ago, I decided to be an egg donor and surrogate for one of my clients, that experience opened my eyes to what I really wanted to do. To embrace the opportunity, I have to not only help others feel beautiful but to help change their lives. It was like the fire had been relit in my soul after the baby was born last June. I decided I’d rebrand, grow and embrace my own Evolution. As I feel we all should. Thus, Evolution Salon: I Am The Evolution was born.
I found a new building four times the size of the old salon, remodeled completely with the help of my dad and husband (who’s breathtaking paintings adorn the walls). Our space has become a sanctuary for each individual who steps through our doors. It’s the most beautiful space I’ve ever been in… it’s like my own museum that I get to share with all of you. I have the most wonderful team of strong amazing talented women who share the space with me. And we will continue to grow and share our evolution with the world.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Hah, smooth? Absolutely not, but that’s what makes the journey so worth it… to embrace those adversities, learn from them and grow. From the start of cosmetology school it was rough. You get that many women in a tiny little school in a small town and you get lots of drama… it’s not super fun. I lived with a lot of fear in my younger life. I was so afraid of failure that I created a lot of my own chaos and found reasons not to flourish behind the chair although I was very good at it. It took years of life experience through having kids, a failed marriage, single motherhood and bad decisions to finally find and own my worth and value as not only a stylist but as a human. Not to mention having a child last year who was biologically my son to give to another family… it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but also the most rewarding. Without all of the hardships, I wouldn’t be here now… I know that sounds cliche but man, is it true. Looking back would it have been easier to keep the 9-5 office job? Perhaps… but nowhere near as fulfilling as the world of entrepreneurship is for me. Honestly, it still isn’t smooth sailing 100% of the time. Now though? Now I embrace the bumps and know if I work hard enough, share my vision and heart and push through the evolution truly is worth it.
Evolution Salon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’ll start with what I’m most proud of. I’m most proud of the light and sanctuary we provide for anybody who sets through our doors… not just myself but the women who work with me. I think about all else, how we make people feel is what sets us apart. Have you ever walked into a salon and felt uninvited? Like you were a burden? I mean, walking in you already feel vulnerable and if you aren’t feeling that love when you step through the door it kills the whole experience. We don’t let that happen, ever. We create an experience for you about you. We are a full-service salon. We do all things hair, waxing, permanent makeup, lashes, microblading and I also have a clothing line that is available for purchase in the salon and online.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
For me, success is an endless pursuit. I believe wholeheartedly in being better than I was yesterday. I don’t think it’s a destination really… how can it be? I was talking to my kids today about this exact thing… our oldest are twins. They’ll be 15 in a few days and they’re definitely working on figuring themselves out. I was explaining that there is no “on top”… you climb the mountain to get to the top right? Well you can’t just stay there or you’re going to slide back down. You can’t be stagnant… it’s a forever climb and I love it. I love hard work. I love helping others. To me, success is doing my part to shift the world to better space as a whole and sometimes that’s as simple as smiling at a stranger, asking how the cashiers day is or as complex as having a baby for a family who tried to for 12 years. It’s teaching my children to work hard, take accountability, embrace their own individuality and pay the goodness forward. Success is creating a wake of good, of positivity, to never stop evolving.
