Today we’d like to introduce you to Candis Spivey.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’ve always been a creative person and enjoyed everything from painting to refinishing old furniture, to cooking. After years of working in corporate jobs and never feeling fulfilled in my career, I knew I had to shake things up and find something that would allow me to be me. I stumbled upon cake as a creative outlet when a friend of mine showed me a photo of a cake she wanted for a birthday party but didn’t know where to order it. I volunteered to give it a shot and after countless YouTube tutorials, clumsy mistakes, and a little cursing I had made my first cake. I didn’t know right away that it was what the future had in store, but I knew it was something I wanted to explore. Six months and three cakes later I found myself planning my future as a cake designer. Cake Design isn’t just my career; it’s how I make my mark on the world.
Please tell us about your art.
As a cake designer, I create custom cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and other desserts. All of my designs are unique and while I may draw inspiration from photos, past work, my environment, etc. no two cakes are ever the same. I believe that using high-quality ingredients & distinctive design is the only way to create a great product. A custom cake is so much more than just flour, sugar, & butter shoved into an oven and put out on a table; it is a work of art that evokes real feeling and emotion. It’s easy to see how much it means to my clients when they receive something that was crafted just for them and nothing leaves my kitchen until it is absolutely perfect. If a client is looking for an exact replica of something they found online, there are plenty of places I can refer them to, but if they are looking for a truly unique dessert, I will pour my heart and soul into creating something really special for them.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
My biggest supporter has always been my husband, Reid. When I decided to start this journey, we knew there would be some financial challenges, but he never showed any sign of hesitation and encouraged me to follow my passion. He truly loves what he does for a living and wanted that same happiness for me. Seeing him working a job that he loves was one of my biggest inspirations in my decision to leave corporate America behind me and start over doing something I love.
I would tell anyone thinking about starting out that if you find what you love you need to go for it and have faith that everything will fall into place but be sure to have a supportive network of friends, family, and loved ones who believe in your work around you. You’ll need their positivity and encouragement on those challenging days.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
