Today we’d like to introduce you to Calib Weeden.
Calib, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico and came to Arizona when i was 18. I grew up in a pretty bad neighborhood, and like a lot of people in my situation I grew up pretty fast. I took an Interest in Photography at a young age because of my uncle and my grandfather.
My uncle would travel around and take a verity of photos ranging from Landscapes to Moto GP races. It was always something that caught my eye because you were looking at what someone saw with their own eyes and that was something I wanted, to show people what I see.
Like most people, it started with a point, and shoot camera’s that I could get my hands on, and then as phones became more advanced I started using the camera on my phone. I started with pictures of flowers, my animals, and random things that caught my eye that I thought would look cool.
Things really didn’t get serious until about five years ago when I bought my first DSLR camera and bought my first car at the time, a 2003 Subaru WRX. I’ve always had a passion for car so in my head, it was a simple equation to do car photography, and since I had a car I would start with that and find my way to car shows and car meets in my local area.
A few years later, I had an opportunity to work and become partners with Adventurous Minds Studio, Since joining my home gym Omega Strong Gym I’ve had opportunities for paid work come my way, and it’s been a big boost for me, helping me put more of a spotlight on my work.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Just like most people I’ve had a good amount of speed bumps along the way. Most of my struggles came from not having any formal teaching when it came to photography, learning the intricacies and tricks to getting certain shots and how to properly use lighting. It’s taken some time, but I’m still learning to make my photos even better.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Darkhammer Media story. Tell us more about the business.
I mostly do photography on my own but I also script write, on set photography, and direction with Adventurous Minds Studio. I probably most proud when it comes to my photography is my ability to shoot just as I see it and to pull out a natural feel from the photograph.
Far too often pictures are heavily edited, and it gives them an unnatural feel, I like to keep mine simple. When it comes to script writing, I pride myself on being as original as possible and giving people something to think about.
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
I don’t have many plans, just continue what I’m doing and grow my name along with my partners and friends. I’m very much a person that deals with things as they come.
